Through out the past three years, I've learned so much about being on my own and figuring out what I want to do with my life. When I first entered college, I was terrified. I was so scared to be away from home and on my own. There are many transitions I faced when I was a freshman. It was all overwhelming for me. I didn't enjoy the school I was attending and which made my freshman year not a major highlight in my college career.
When I transferred schools, I enjoyed the program better and I liked it better than the school I attended my freshman year. However, when I started at the school I'm at now, I wasn't completely sure I wanted to major in radio broadcasting which was my major then. By second semester of my sophomore year, I figured out I needed to try a different major. I have a huge passion for music and thought that audio engineering was worth trying. I remember thinking attending concerts and setting up the sound for the concerts would be so much fun! When I started second semester of that program, I knew I didn't want to stick with audio. It was very technical and I didn't enjoy what I was learning.
When I had a change of heart, with the program I no longer wanted to pursue, I was very disappointed in myself because I didn't know what else I wanted to pursue and changing my major to something else would put me back and I'd graduate later than expected. I thought I needed to have my life all figured out with knowing what to do for the rest of my life and then I realized I'm only 21 years old. I felt lost as a person. I'm still trying to figure out who I want to be and change is always good.
I decided to try marketing communications because I love music and I love the event planning side to marketing. I have to say, doing this, I stepped outside my comfort zone and am learning graphic design (which is not a strength of mine), I'm taking a class that prepares me on public speaking and how to speak in the professional/ career world. I am very surprised with my grade in that class because I'm not the best public speaker but have an A in the class (I keep surprising myself on how far I've come in the past three years). I also joined the public relations chapter and met some great people and creating friendship. I like being part of the team and like promoting different events. Being part of the public relations group is a huge highlight for me because I'm putting myself out there and this can help me in the real world.
