For a city placed right in the middle of the caffeine-fueled Ivy League, New Haven's coffee scene leaves a lot to be desired. This city doesn't lack in quantity of coffee shops, there is one on every corner. But, the quality doesn't rival other college towns.
Except for one shop.
Nestled between East Rock and Fair Haven, The Coffee Pedaler offers a great cup of coffee and an atmosphere that makes you slow down and stay a while.

The store, which offers only espresso drinks and pour over coffees, keeps it simple by offering limited food items, and four to five pour over options.
The Coffee Pedaler brews George Howell-roasted beans. George Howell is a pioneer in the coffee industry. In the early 1970s he sold his chain of specialty coffee shops in Boston to Starbucks, which would capitulate Starbucks' Northeast expansion. Nowadays, Howell is roasting speciality coffee, mostly single origins, to sell for wholesale.
I tried a Costa Rican Vienna Roast by pour over. In general, Vienna roasts are typically extremely dark roasts. Oftentimes, retailers will sell "Vienna roast" coffee that is so dark that it is technically burnt. Howell, however, reinvented the Vienna roast to be a more-drinkable, less-abrasive dark roast. I drank it black and found it very enjoyable.
I also opted for something a little lighter. I tried the Ethiopia Reko, single origin. I have tried a few Ethiopian coffees in my life and I am keen to the bright, citrusy flavor notes often associated with them. The pour over was fruity and bright while still maintaining a delicate mouth feel. Both coffees were wash processed, which typically makes for a brighter cup.
All of The Coffee Pedaler's pour over options are great for everyone, from the coffee snob to a student just trying to get their fix. Aside from pour overs, the shop also offers espresso drinks for the latte lovers of the world.
The Coffee Pedaler offers customers a great cup of coffee and their employees are always up to answer any questions that you might have for them.
The store is opening a satellite location is Westville, just off campus, so students will soon be able to indulge in a pour over coffee or one of the shop's signature Montreal bagels, at any time, even between classes.
