The Boys Are Back in Town

Starting up school again with my friends

For the past couple of weeks, I reflected on how nervous and excited I was to come back to school. This past week was finally the week where I moved back to school with my friends, and even though we’ve only been back for a few days, it’s already been a blast. Move in day, the very first day back, was exciting and exhausting all the same. Moving all of my stuff (books, my printer and television, as well as a lot of other supplies) coupled with the ridiculous heat, was not a very fun combination. Besides the usual frustrations of move in day, the real jy was being able to see my friends again after 3 and a half month. Even though we all kept in regular contact throughout the summer, and getting to hang out with my roommate a couple of times, it was a real joy to see my buds together again. We even went out to pick up some last minute supplies that night, and though grocery shopping might not seem like the most exciting thing in the world, when it’s with these guys, anything and everything is an adventure.

The rest of the week went about as well as could be expected, meeting my new professors in new class environments. Once the initial anxieties were settled, I was happy to find out that all of my professors (so far) are all really nice. Two of the classes I was anxious about the most, the two business courses I’m taking for my minor, were actually pretty cool. Though the workload seems a bit much for my liking, the professors seem pretty nice, which always makes a class that much more enjoyable. In my opinion, having the right professor in any class makes any subject more fun to learn, so having met 4 of my 5 professors, it’s relieving to know that this semester should be pretty good. It also helps that, compared to past semesters, I have plenty of free time on my hands to take care of this workload. Even though I have other responsibilities on top of school, after the next few weeks, I’m sure that I’ll get the hang of my schedule, just like all of my buds are doing though.

One of the most jarring things to me, one that my roommate pointed out, is that now that all of us, my roommates and I, are all back living in the same room again it feels like business as usual. The minute my head hit my pillow move in night, it felt like any other school night. Being in my dorm with my buds is so natural in my mind, that it really feels like no time at all has past. Even though all of us had our own summer adventures, and each of us made some changes, just being together again almost makes it seem like the summer never really happened, and we just jumped from one semester to the next seamlessly. In any event, it has been a great start to a new school year, one that will hopefully be just as good as the years before it.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
