The Bold Type

And I don't mean for emphasis.

While browsing through the endless possibilities of Hulu and Netflix, I stumbled upon a show that I had heard of, but really didn't pay attention to. While bored out of my mind, I thought, 'Hey, why not? You're just going to rewatch something anyway, why not start a new show?' So I did.

The Bold Type. Takes place in New York City, three best friends all work at a women's magazine, Scarlet, and go through the troubles of careers, men and everyday drama, together. I thought it was going to be just a little simple show that has an overdone plot, but I was wrong, SO wrong.

This show talks about things other shows shy from. It showcases how one of our lovely ladies tries to find her sexuality and how to be confident in that. This young women rises up and was afraid to let her race define her, but she owns who she is now, and is reaching out to those whose voice's normally get squished or pushed aside. Meet Kat.

Another of our leading ladies goes through a rough patch in her life as she finds out things in her body aren't going to be the way she wants to be. That, sure, we can try to control all aspects of our lives, but sometimes things don't go our way. Oh, and it's okay to have hookups, just don't bring your hookup and boyfriend to the same party. Or have them both offer up their lives on a silver platter for you. Just sayin'. Meet Jane.

Oh dear Sutton. She works her butt off to get where she wants to be in the company. She pushes herself to do better because she knows she can do better. From assistant to fashion, she knows how to rock her career. Her love life was at its peak, but she wanted to have a career without her mans help. We'll see where this one goes. Meet Sutton.

But what I'm trying to get at here is simple, we need more shows like this. We need more real, authentic, real things happening shows. The Bold Type discusses topics and issues that are relevant to our times now, from sexuality to gun reform. It doesn't sugarcoat it. It talks about how rape is something that is happening and how hopeless victims feel, how we push aside other races because we think of ourselves to be better.

The Bold Type should be more recognized. It is taking leaps while others are taking baby steps. It is being bold and daring.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
