Rebekah Marine, a New Jersey native, was born without a right forearm, but she has never let that hold her back. Not only is she a model, but also an inspiration to us all. She is now one of the most recognizable models in the disabled community.
It all started in 2011, when she got fitted for her i-limb quantum prosthetic hand and one of her friends suggested that she model it. It was game over at this point. Marine realized that she could now make this “disability” into something positive and inspire others. However, it was not all that easy at first. In an interview with People magazine, Marine says: “It was hard at first to put myself out there for the whole world to see.” However, she's glad she did because this is now the happiest she has ever been.
Of course, not everyone sees the whole picture when Marine comes in for a casting call, and she totally understands that her look is not for everyone. Her confidence and acceptance is the ultimate testament to her strength. Overcoming rejection after rejection and never giving up eventually led her to walking in New York Fashion Week, Nordstrom’s 2015 anniversary catalog and many more big-name brands/shows.
Not only is she a bad*ss model, but she is also an ambassador for the Lucky Fin Project, which aims to raise awareness and support for those with “upper limb differences”. She travels the country giving motivational speeches to children with limb differences.
Marine wants to change the way people look at disabilities not only in the modeling industry but everywhere. "It's so important to include more diverse models, because after all, nearly one in five people in America have a disability. We should be celebrating uniqueness, not conforming to what media thinks is beautiful," Marine told Mashable.
If Marine doesn’t inspire you I don’t know who will. Love yourself, and I promise good things will come of it.
