Other than Trump and Clinton butting heads, this past election, the majority of people did not take into account the friendship Ivanka and Chelsea have with one another.
This may be an unlikely friendship because their parents have vastly differing opinions, and seem to be polar opposite where their beliefs are involved. However, oddly enough, Chelsea Clinton and Ivanka Trump have forged a bond of friendship even though it may be unheard of that the two political rivals can be pals. But this shouldn't be as unlikely as it sounds, or ridiculous to hear because even though our country and people may seem incredibly divided, these girls are not. They have remained civil to each other, while their parents have not during the election. They set a standard and did not let the chaos of the election get to them, as the rest of the country may have believed.
During their parent's campaign for the election, they made a pact not to appear together in public in order to avoid the awkwardness throughout the campaign.Through the many nasty comments and things said between Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump in their respective campaigns for President, Chelsea and Ivanka, sources such as Polticio said that it may take awhile for their friendship to recover. Fortunately, both daughters do not blame their parents for their opinions.
This “bipartisan friendship” that blossomed between Chelsea and Ivanka was not because of their parents' rivalry throughout their campaigns, nor did their parents opposing views interfere with their friendship. They had become friends long before the election because they run in similar social circles and have a lot in common. Chelsea and Ivanka met and became friends through their husbands. Both women have grown up in privilege; Chelsea being the child of former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton she had grown up with her teen years being spent in the White House, while Ivanka Trump grew up in a Trump Tower in New York and was used to special privileges such as private jet trips to Palm Beach.
Both women also had to deal with growing up and living in the public eye, especially when their father’s sex scandals were concerned, but both had to act as stabilizing roles when their fathers. Ivanka and Chelsea both devote their time and their careers to their family’s work. Chelsea is a high ranking and board member official within the Clinton Foundation, and Ivanka serves the same roles in the Trump Organization.
Chelsea vowed to remain friends with Ivanka no matter what happened in the election , commenting on “The View” that “We were friends long before this election. We will be friends long after this election. Our friendship didn't start in politics, it certainly is not going to end because of politics.”
Both women have been supportive of their parents throughout their respective campaigns. Ivanka has to almost play a balancing act between her father’s extreme opinions, and his derogatory comments and beliefs while keeping her own separate. She shown her support for him while campaigning for him but also doesn’t agree with his what he stands for or his policy proposals, but supports him merely as her father running for President. When she was campaigning for him, she gave her perspective from a daughter’s point of view. She said that Donald had always respected and encouraged women, otherwise she wouldn’t be the high-level executive she is now within his organization and said he was a wonderful parent and colleague. She has altogether distanced herself from politics and works with branding a different identity for herself. Ivanka is the face of female empowerment and has written several books as well as wanting to become one of the biggest brands within her fashion and jewelry lines in the world.
Chelsea, on the other hand, supports her mother’s beliefs but has a different role to play than Ivanka’s. She is still a supportive daughter to her mother and showed that when campaigning for Hillary, but she also gave a different role as well. She served to soften the hard political image of Hillary for the public; being a politician and a public servant all these years kinda distances you from the public a bit, so having her daughter to show a different side of her, is always a benefit. She is currently a vice chair within the Clinton Foundation in which she persuades businesses and governments to improve lives around the globe as well as being a renowned writer of four books.
Despite their parents’ views and rivalry, Ivanka and Chelsea still remain friends throughout the campaigns and the election process. They are both powerful women and faces of female empowerment as well as supportive daughters to their parents. Even an election that was as rough as the election of 2016 cannot break their friendship. At the end of the day, it may be hard to remember that politics will just be different beliefs, and policies but if anything, Ivanka and Chelsea can teach us that we need to be more bipartisan in order to accomplish anything and unite to be friends instead of letting our ideologies rip us apart. They can be a demonstration for all of us, Republicans or Democrats who may be still struggling to remain civil to each other after the Election.
