Dear High Schoolers:
They say high school is the best four years of your life, and I promise you it isn’t. You have so much more to look forward to in life so don’t let people tell you that “after you graduate your life will suck”. Because it won’t. The rest of your life is entirely up to you so keep your standards high. If those four years were supposed to be the best of my life, I’d say I am quite disappointed. Yeah it was fun and simple, but now that I’m graduated I have the rest of my life to look forward to.
For example, you still have your entire college career ahead of you. And take it from me, college is 100x better than high school. Everyone here is so open minded and not as judgmental as those “mean girls” in your high school. There’s no pressure of being prom queen, or getting invited to all the parties after football games. Here in college everyone is free to be whoever they want. Everyone is friendly and open to you because everyone else is just as desperate for friends. You get a fresh start with all these new, interesting people and it’s amazing. College means so many more freedoms, you can finally be yourself without worrying about what people will think of you. In high school if you were to wear onesie pajamas you would have got made fun of and maybe even sent to the principal’s office, wear a onesie in college and people will be saying “that’s freaking genius.” So this is your time to be you. Write a book, join a club, fall in love, go to frat parties, and just do everything you were to scared to do in high school.
And life gets even better so don’t sell yourself short. After you graduate college you get to start the life you’ve been working towards for years. I bet you’ll love your job, and you get to wake up and live your dreams out every day. One day you’ll be living your own life, but so happily getting to go home and visit your parents every Sunday so they can tell you how proud they are of you. Now is the time to make your own choices and live the life you've always wanted to live. Not the life others think you should be living.
So please don’t listen to those narrow-minded people who tell you to “enjoy high school because it’s the last of your best years” because that’s just crazy talk. Choose to make the best of every second of the rest of your life. When you walk across that stage at graduation, your headed towards great adventure and freedom. Always remember where you came from, but never forget that you can be so much more than that.
