The Best Things In Life Are Free

50 of life's simplest pleasures

The Best Things In Life Are Free
Taylor Drysdale

Like all college students, one of the first, and most important lessons learned while at University is how to budget. Money can be tight and complaints are often rampant about how expensive everything is. This is true. Tuition, text books, activities, shopping, sports events etc, the list can go on and on. It is with this mindset that we often miss out some of the best things. We overlook small moments when in reality those are what can make life truly worth it. The following are just a sampling of some of life's greatest occasions that often go unappreciated.

1. How snow looks right after it has fallen and no one has tainted its pristine whiteness

2. The feeling of sliding into a freshly made bed and being surrounded by warmth

3. The smell of autumn in the air that you can't quite describe, yet is somehow so distinct

4. The thrill of jumping into a deep puddle with your rain boots on

5. That sensation of affection when being embraced in a great big hug

6. The sound of laughter ringing out from your friends

7. Seeing a dog being perfectly content with the way that it is, without a care in the world

8. Finishing a long homework assignment and the feeling of satisfaction that accompanies it

9. Seeing the first flower buds of spring bursting from their winter slumber

10. The way that a crunchy leaf sounds when you step on it

11. When there isn't any line at your favorite coffee shop

12. The gratitude you feel when a stranger holds open the door for you

13. Finally nailing a skill that you have been practicing forever

14. Getting into a heartfelt conversation with someone about something you are passionate about

15. Playing with a baby and making him/her laugh

16. The pride you feel when someone gives you a compliment

17. And the joy that comes with complimenting someone else

18. Getting the last parking spot in a crowded lot

19. The squishiness of sand in between your toes

20. Putting on laundry fresh out of the dryer

21. When an old song comes on and you still remember all the words

22. Getting an awesome grade on an exam you studied really hard for

23. Snow days

24. The first time you jump into a pool at the beginning of the summer

25. Getting a kiss from a puppy

26. Reuniting with someone you haven't seen in a long time

27. When your favorite team wins the championship game

28. Turning on the tv just as the best movie starts

29. Laying in soft grass on a warm sunny day

30. The smell of freshly baked cookies greeting you at home

31. Watching the sun set on the horizon

32. When a song ends just as you arrive at your destination

33. Giving back to others

34. That feeling when you finish a really good book

35. Wearing fuzzy socks around the house

36. The flip side of your pillow

37. Being the first one to take a scoop from a gallon of ice cream

38. Smiling at strangers

39. The smell of fresh picked flowers

40. Waking up feeling refreshed

41. When you almost miss your train, but just make it

42. Spontaneous dance parties

43. Random acts of kindness

44. Seeing your first shooting star and making a wish of course

45. Hearing someone say "I love you"

46. The sound of silence

47. The feeling of relief when you finish a particularly grueling assignment

48. Feeling confident in your own skin

49. Learning to love yourself

50. Being with your family and friends

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
