Studying: No one enjoys it but everyone does it. From the moment we enter America's education system, we are bound to the words in our textbooks and pages in our notebooks, filled with countless points intended to help us grow and gain knowledge. Is that always the case? I'm not sure, but at least it's a start.
For me, when I'm not in class or working, I spend the majority of my time in the library on campus. It has become a second home for me and I should just sleep there some nights. But despite my affinity for the building that houses thousands of books, a delicious coffee shop, and an abundance of adequate study space, I need to change it up and study in different locations.
One of the best ways is to study off-campus. It allows you to get out into the community, experience a change in scenery, and look like a cool college kid when you pull your laptop out in the middle of a busy environment. Actually, I'm not sure if that makes you cool, but it always sparks conversation with strangers in the movies. Anyway, off-campus studying offers a new studying experience and sometimes makes it a little less daunting. Here are a few places around St. Norbert College I enjoy studying at and recommend for all:
1. Luna Coffee Roasters in De Pere
This is at the top of my list for a variety of reasons. First, it is close to campus, so the commute is minimal. Second, they sell coffee. Without coffee in my life, I would be lost, so it's great that Luna can provide this necessity. This quaint coffee shop offers a homey feel as you stare at your computer screen, attempting to make sense of the information in front of you. The people are friendly and contribute to the welcoming atmosphere, making it a comfortable space to write a paper, study flash cards, or cram for an exam that you've put off all week. Seriously, go to Luna, support local businesses, and enjoy a quiet afternoon sipping on a cup of coffee and crossing things off your academic to-do list.
2. Kavarna Coffee in Green Bay
This is another coffee shop that offers many of the same things Luna offers, including a great space to study. Kavarna is significantly larger than Luna, providing more options for seating, whether in a quiet corner or amidst the hustle and bustle of others in a similar situation. While Kavarna is about a 10- to 15-minute commute, it is definitely worth it. In the heart of downtown Green Bay, it offers additional opportunities to explore if you want to take a break from studying, with appealing shops and a variety of restaurants. Make a day of it, get some work done, and enjoy an afternoon in the excitement that is downtown Green Bay.
3. The Abbey Bar and Grill in De Pere
Although I've never studied here, I knew a few people who have found this local restaurant to be an ideal study space. The separation of the bar from the restaurant area offers plenty of space to spread out and get down to business (although, probably not to defeat the Huns). You can enjoy studying with a group or individually over a delicious meal or a few draft brews, allowing you to relax yet feel accomplished. The Abbey offers a cozy atmosphere so the staff don't feel as if they have to entertain you or consistently checkin to see how you're doing. If you haven't considered studying at the Abbey, stop by with a book or two, order a beer, and complete an assignment.
4. Voyager Park in De Pere
I am a sucker for studying outdoors on a sunny afternoon in the fresh air. If you are looking for a relaxing place to study, walk across the bridge and journey to Voyager Park. Whether you sit in the grass, find a picnic table, or claim your spot on the pier, this outdoor venue allows for adequate space to accomplish many tasks. This prime study spot allows for opportunity to exercise by walking and getting things done with the many available spaces to study. The next time it is nice, consider packing up and venturing across the bridge to study until the sun goes down.
So there you have it, folks. Next time you need a break from your usual on-campus venue, consider one of these prime locations in which to study. Until then, keep reading and reviewing those flash cards.
