I don’t know about you guys, but Christmas music was a huge part of my childhood. Usually, my mom started blaring the feel-good holiday tunes well before Thanksgiving, and per request of my sister and me, continued through January. This tradition has followed me to college, prompting me to have our apartment Christmas tree set up before my roommates could even come home from Thanksgiving break.
1. "Mary Did You Know" – Pentatonix.
If you have never listened to the Pentatonix Christmas album, you are doing yourself an injustice. ‘Mary Did You Know’ is honestly a life changing song…after listening and singing along you believe you could be the next American Idol winner.
2. "Merry Christmas From the Family" – Robert Earl Keen.
This song is a hilarious classic. Most people have never heard of it, but after my uncle playing it on repeat one Christmas, the Mitchell family knows every word. Highly recommend adding this tune to your Christmas playlist.
3. "12 Pains of Christmas" – Bob Rivers & Twisted Radio.
This song is one of the most relatable and truthful Christmas songs there is. Although the Christmas season is a joyful one, it is also one of the most stressful times of the year. Going through the "12 Pains of Christmas" leaves listeners laughing at their so called "pains."
4. "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" – Frank Sinatra.
Although it’s a slower tune, this heartfelt song evokes feelings of sleepy-Christmas Eve-stomach-filled-with-cookies thoughts. It seems as if this song should be played on repeat in the background of the Christmas day activities.
5. "Last Christmas" – Wham!
One of the happiest, carefree Christmas songs there is. This is a windows-down (at least if you live in Florida), sing-along song.
6. "Do You Hear What I Hear" – Vanessa Williams.
Like "Mary Did You Know," this tune will leave you feeling like a professional opera singer. With backup singers constantly humming in the background, your vocal strings are given quite the task. Nothing compares to belting "...LISTEN TO WHAT I SAY..." along with the voice of a sweet angel.
7. "White Christmas" – Bing Crosby.
Growing up in Tallahassee, Florida, the thought of a white Christmas has always been enchanting. This song almost makes you feel like you can hear the snow coming down outside. Even if it's the usual 75 degrees.
9. "Carol of the Bells" – John Williams.
This version of Carol of the Bells is by far the best version ever released. AND it’s from one of the best Christmas movies there is. Seems fitting, right?
10. "Believe" – John Groban.
Some say that The Polar Express is a creepy movie, and honestly after thinking about it, it is an extremely odd movie that kids love. What you can’t argue with is that the soundtrack is a lyrical work of art. “Believe”
11. "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" – John Lennon.
Although I'm not a fan of the whole "Xmas" idea, this song is a great tune that is extremely John Lennon-esque. With the chorus consisting of a variety of voices screaming, this is a great song to sing along to with all of your friends.
12. "All I Want For Christmas Is You" – Mariah Carey.
Finally. The best Christmas song of all time. This is one of those songs you can't not sing along to. Words that have been used to describe this classic are "upbeat, uplifting, spectacular, and spunky." Mariah will never not be queen, and this song will never not be the best.
I hope that after reading this unofficial Christmas playlist, you are inspired to start jamming to the best music there is. Maybe, if you get a wild hair, you will start exploring the different genres that exist within the Holiday music section. Merry Christmas!!
