Your dorm room was all packed up, a year’s worth of memories stored within its walls. You said goodbye to your friends, hugging, crying and promising that you would all keep in touch throughout the summer. You climbed into the car and everything rushed past you — your dorm building, the dining hall, the building you had that anatomy class in and the home you made for yourself this year. Eventually, the car made its way to the campus exit and summer had officially begun.
Flash-forward three months later. It is now August, and it is almost time to go back to school. You are bursting with excitement, knowing that you will soon be back on your stomping grounds. While you are eager to load up the car and move into your selected housing, keep in mind all of the luxuries, if you will, that you’ve been lucky to have at your disposal while at home this summer.
Quality food
There is nothing like a home-cooked meal, and for any college student, this is a true gift. Keep in mind how you will be craving Mom’s delicious spaghetti and meatballs when your school dining hall is serving you “steak.” At home, you should truly savor this privilege before you are back to ordering your usual Chinese takeout.
Showers sans flip flops.
Needless to say, no one likes showering in flip flops, and at home, you have that benefit all summer long. I’d say that’s a pretty big perk.
Laundry done by Mom
At school, you have to find the time to cram in washing your clothes in between classes and extracurriculars. At home, you know your clothes are getting clean, stress-free, with your mom taking over the task. Keep that in mind when it is time to do the next laundry load on campus.
Privacy
College is lots of fun and filled with adventure, but privacy is limited. Enjoy these moments you have to yourself at home, and maybe use it as time to think of new goals you want to accomplish this upcoming year.
Connecting with old friends
It is always wonderful to catch up with your childhood friends and fill them in on college life and vice versa. Reconnect with your "old" friends. Go to the beach, the movies, grab a bite and make new memories with them before you all go your separate ways once again. During the year, make the time to visit each other on your respective campuses.
At college, you are used to a life full of freedom and no curfews. When returning home, it can be a bit challenging to adapt back to the regimens of living under your parents’ roof again, but there are also many advantages. Keep these in mind and enjoy your summer break. Make it last, way before the leaves start to turn colors.
