In 1970 the Beatles released a song that became one of the most famous songs in history. That song was "Let It Be." Lately, I've been thinking about how the Beatles should be given more credit for the wisdom that is contained in those lyrics than they currently receive. Just like everyone else, I have been floored, shocked, scared, and surprised at the multiple events that have taken place recently. It seems as if every day a new report of a shooting, attack, or presidential rally that turn into brutal fights is splashed across every news station in existence. With this is mind, I constantly think about the world that we live in. Is this world going to be safe, and close to the same as the world that I was so lucky to grow up in, for my children? When I read the online news coverage about the mass shooting in Orlando, followed by the articles on the current presidential race, I came to a very big conclusion, one in which we have probably all been thinking. This world needs love and acceptance.
When I say the words "love and acceptance" you are probably assuming that I am talking about who was involved in the shooting in Orlando, but the love and acceptance that I am explaining goes far beyond that certain event. In this world that we live, we are placed in situations where we must choose. We have to choose a political party, because of what we do or don't believe in, we choose to support or not support people who are different then us. Due to the fact that we have to chose, it is very easy for us to lose ourselves in trying to defend what what our beliefs are. We spend so much time and energy trying to make others believe in what we believe in, and trying to force our beliefs onto others, we forget that we all are feeling the same things.
Another line in "Let It Be" says, "And when the broken-hearted people in this world agree, there will be answer, let it be." What if agreeing to disagree is the answer?
What this world needs right now is pure and simple. We need to love each other, accept opinions, and respect beliefs. So many times I have read comments on articles, and articles that bash the opposite view of what someone has to say. No matter what you believe in, we are all experiencing the same feelings about the events that this world has seen. We are all experiencing sadness, and we are all distraught. We all wish that things were different. We all wish that the world was a different place from what it is at this moment in time.
We are all human, which makes disagreement part of our nature. Rather then focusing on our differences, what the world needs now is to chose to focus on what is important. We need to support each other. We should focus on respecting the beliefs of others rather than tearing down them down. As Americans, we have a right to freedom of speech. We have a right to voice our opinion and what that entails. We all want acceptance. It doesn't matter what beliefs or people you support. Whether you do or do not support gay marriage or you do or do not support a certain a candidate, we need to put it aside and focus on what we as humans want and need to survive.
I believe a crucial part of life is agreeing to disagree. Even though we all have different beliefs about how today's problems should be handled, there is a point where we must put aside our differences and think about the big picture. The big picture is unifying our feelings towards this world. The world and it's people are hurting. At this moment, in this season of life, we can accomplish more by accepting rather then rejecting. Sometimes the answer to every problem is to cut, print, and move on, or in this case, is to listen to one old song.
