Guess which posts I scroll through.
I'd rather hide behind the meaningless than face the reality of people getting killed for no reason.
Many do as I do,
for that's how we humans live: isolated from one another, stuck in our own little bubble.
It seems as if we are unable to function if we care too much about other people's problems.
Are women getting raped and picking suicide instead? Oh, that's really sad.
Are children getting executed with bullets to the head? What a shame.
Because most humans are also compassionate beings, we'll feel a twist in our gut,
feel sad or upset that such horrid things are occurring, but it'll go away soon enough.
And we'll go back to the tasks that are immediately important to us.
We'll return to magnifying our problems as the only ones that exist,
and everything else will fall into the background.
I'm not saying I am immune to this behavior.
In a couple of days, I'm sure all the people getting murdered in Aleppo will also fade from my mind, becoming a distant memory.
My daily struggles will be in the forefront of my mind, always, and will never be conquered.
I believe this is human nature, for we can only carry so much with us throughout the day
So we narrow it down to the things we can control, the things we feel we can change.
But we can make an impact, in at least little ways.
We can raise awareness, so those souls don't leave this world without recognition.
We can pray, for prayer is a powerful advocate of change.
I urge you all to not just scroll through this article.
I urge you all to educate yourselves on this situation (as I did when my sister asked me to pray for the people in Aleppo).
Some of the images are gruesome, but let it happen.
Let it ruin your day,
wish you never saw it,
be overcome with emotion for these people,
for maybe that will make us stray from our own lives for just a moment, to focus on people who are really suffering.
So next time you hashtag pray for Aleppo, actually pray.
