During the renaissance, artists were appreciated. Highly thought of in society. To have the ability to create something out of nothing but imagination was somewhat of a rare skill, and people appreciated what artists could contribute to the community.
It’s kind of obvious that besides pop stars and a few other exceptions, the creative arts aren’t nearly as appreciated today. Personally, I can attest to that getting a degree in the arts isn’t very highly thought of. So, in a time like this, it’s really easy to get down on our work. To want to give up. Not many artists make it nowadays, and you might not think you’re that good, so what’s the point? I know I’ve thought this and things like it dozens of times. I’ve wanted to drop the whole writing thing and get a degree in something “practical,” like business or communications.
But, whenever I begin to think this way, I have to stop myself. Especially in light of recent events; ie tragedies such as in Orlando. Without artists in the past, we wouldn’t have nearly as much to put in the history books. It’s sort of weird to think that someday, our civilization will be ancient civilization. All we know of ancient civilizations today is based on art, architecture, pottery, and murals. Anne Frank, whether she realized it or not, was creating a work of art just through her diary. Iconic pieces of music preserve a story behind them that would not have a tribute without the artistry of the composer. Art is responsible for capturing the spirit of the time. Art is subjective, yes, but that is so important because the world isn’t by any means an objective place.
As artists, we have a responsibility not to give up. We all know that every mind works in a different way, and because of that, the world goes round. So, even if it seems like you’re not really appreciated by society, if you feel like you’re not good enough, please don’t give up. We need more artists like you in the world. We need creative minds to document the spirit of our time—through dance, through music, through painting and writing and drawing. This isn't to mention that your craft makes you feel good, you wouldn't be an artist otherwise. Not only do you owe it to yourself to stick to your craft, but you owe it to the world.
