The Adventures Of Vandrea

Episode 9: Representation Without Representation

The interior of the massive space station was even more awe-inspiring than Andrea had expected. The primary port, where Buddy had piloted his space ship to a landing, was paneled with a type of space-glass that allowed the travelers to The Confederation to view the grand green planet that the space station orbited. More impressive to Andrea was the wide variety of life forms that were moving through the primary port. Andrea saw not only life forms that defied her knowledge of biology, but also inanimate objects she was very familiar with. By one ship she saw ceiling fans hopping around, by another she saw a group of cats who seemed very familiar with Buddy. Instantly drawing out her fear, Andrea also saw a ship surrounded by dryers.

"It's the dryers!" Andrea exclaimed.

"Slow down there, killer." Buddy stopped her. "They're friendly."

"Plus, there's a non-aggression treaty in order here." Glenn chimed in.

"You've been here before?" Andrea turned to Glenn.

"Of course!" Glenn said with a smile.

Andrea shook her head and continued to marvel at the brand new world she was being introduced to. If it weren't for Glenn constantly pulling her along, she would've stood in the primary port the entire time. Glenn dragged her along following Buddy out of the port and into the processing bay. There Andrea saw lines upon lines of life forms waiting to step up to a window, behind which sat a blue life form, who operated futuristic computers and spoke in a language that Andrea didn't believe that she'd ever understand.

While Andrea was experiencing culture shock, Buddy weaved his way through the crowds of people and to one of the holographic gates, guarded by large, stone beings. With Glenn and Andrea in tow, Buddy spoke softly to the stone guards who let them through without making a single noise. Andrea tried not to stare, but she found it difficult when everything around her was so new and unique.

Buddy led Andrea and Glenn down a series of corridors in the interior of The Confederation before stopping at a inconspicuous door situated in a hallway filled with inconspicuous doors.

"What is this place?" Andrea said out loud, though she meant to think it to herself.

"This is my office." Buddy said dully, opening the door with the wave of his paw. On the inside was very similar to Andrea's conceptions of a senator's office. There was a desk piled with papers, as well as one of the futuristic computers that were used in the processing bay. Around the room there was a couch, many books, and items Andrea assumed were books from different planets. Buddy hopped up behind the desk and lightly gestured to the couch, where Andrea and Glenn seated themselves.

"Buddy, what is this place." Andrea asked, but Buddy ignored her, instead choosing to focus on his computer.

"This place is The Confederation." Glenn spoke up. "This is where all the planets in the galaxy come to discuss galactic policy."

"Why doesn't Earth know about this?" Andrea said.

"Because you weren't deemed necessary." A voice cut off Glenn. Andrea and Glenn turned to see a short, green mushroom-shaped being standing in the doorway. He wore a top hat, and spoke as if he was very archaic. Buddy glanced up from his computer.

"Ah, Doctor Ferguson," Buddy said, "please meet the ambassadors from Earth, Vandrea and Glenn."

"Pleased to meet you." The mushroom man spoke.

"Likewise!" Glenn exclaimed with a smile.

"What do you mean 'weren't deemed necessary'?" Andrea asked him.

"Well you see," Doctor Ferguson started, "Earth is viewed by most planets in the Confederation deem Earth to be far behind technologically and socially. To some Earth even appears to be a planet ripe for colonial picking. Like that of the Dryiarian homeworld."

"The magic-stealing dryers?" Andrea questioned.

"The very same." Doctor Ferguson said. Andrea took a deep breath and rubbed her eyes.

"What is going on here?" She muttered to herself.

"A certain motion was created among The Confederation, heavily influenced by your furry friend," Doctor Ferguson motioned to Buddy, who showed no response, "that Earth be inducted into The Confederation. You Vandrea were specially chosen to represent Earth."

That hit Andrea hard. She was happy she was sitting down, or surely she would've fallen over. Her vision was blurry and she slumped in her seat, thinking about what she had just been told. Andrea had been chosen by Buddy the blind cat to represent the entire planet Earth in a galactic confederation that no one else, except for Glenn, had heard of on Earth. She couldn't tell, but she was hyper-ventilating.

"Vandrea, are you okay?" She heard Glenn's voice pierce through her thoughts. She regained her vision, staring at the plain white ceiling of Buddy's office.

"Why me?" Andrea asked. "I'm just a normal girl, who worked at a stupid little Mexican restaurant, in a tiny little town. What made me your first choice?"

"Look at what you've done, Vandrea." Buddy said, finally turning his attention away from his computer. "You fended off a colonial party of Dryiarians, you saved the Earth from the long-dormant Plantius. If there's another person on Earth who should be representing your planet, please tell me."

"What about our world leaders?" Andrea countered. "The president, the United Nations."

"Bah!" Doctor Ferguson coughed. "They only fight each other. You think they would bode well in The Confederation?"

Andrea sat for a moment, letting the information soak in. She knew deep down they were right. Andrea had done incredible things in the past few days, more than she had ever anticipate doing. Maybe Buddy the blind cat was right.

"Can Glenn join me?" Andrea asked.

"Me?" Glenn was nearly bursting with excitement.

"If you want." Buddy sighed. Andrea and Buddy high-fived. Then Andrea remembered something Buddy had told her when they first met.

"Glenn," Andrea said, "I hereby induct you into the Order of the Burrito."

Glenn cheered for himself. Doctor Ferguson looked as impressed as a green mushroom extra-terrestrial could. Buddy laughed.

"You know I just made that up right?" Buddy informed Andrea.

"I know." Andrea admitted. "But, it feels right."

"Now that all of the excitement is over," Doctor Ferguson cut in, "you must attend the induction meeting."

"Right now?" Andrea asked. Buddy hopped down off his desk and walked past her and Glenn.

"Right now." He said as he passed.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
