When you're a teenager in high school, the last thing you want to do is stand out. You want to mesh together with other people and be one with the crowd. You don't want to be the purple colored pen when everyone else is pink. Fitting in is hard though, and unfortunately, it consumes a lot of people's time in high school. From trying to do what everyone else is doing, to trying to agree with the crowd, fitting in is time consuming, stressful, and is honestly just a big waste of time.
The nightmare, however, doesn't end after high school. It's kind of crazy how desperately people try to fit in. They buy the clothes that are in style, listen to the top hits, and use the most recent slang. But what's the reason for this? The beauty of human nature is the idea of diversity, and variety. That's exactly what humans were made for, to be different.
Think about it. We were all made different. From the point of conception, you are already an entirely different human being than anyone else in the entire universe. There may be people who share similar characteristics to you, but no one will ever be exactly the same. So why do we spend so much time trying to be like everyone else when we were made to be different?
Maybe it's because standing out is possibly the scariest thing you will ever experience. Standing against the crowd and saying, "This is who I am. I don't have to be like you." is nerve wrecking. It feels easier to fit in because then you don't have to spend the rest of your life justifying why your actions are different. But it takes so much more effort to fake being like everyone else. It's easier to be yourself because no one has to teach you how to do it. You don't have to act like anyone else because you can simply act how you please.
In today's society, it's important to emphasize how unique it is to be yourself. There is absolutely no one in this entire universe who is like you. You have your own special DNA, your own feelings and thoughts, and special characteristics that belong exclusively to you. You are you, and you should never feel the need to change yourself to be like everyone else.
Being different may be scary at first but it's an important thing to do. Do yourself justice and express yourself and your uniqueness. No one in this world will every be exactly like you. People can imitate your style, use your words, and pick up your habits, but the only person who will ever be able to live up to those things originally will be you. So be yourself, and enjoy it.
