As a self-proclaimed expert on unrequited love whose passion happens to be songwriting, I feel likes it's my duty to write this little ditty.
1. "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift.
I consider this to be THE unrequited love song of my generation. There's no better way to exhale the woes of young heartbreak quite like yelling these lyrics into a hairbrush in your bedroom on a school night.
2. "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt.
This song is so heartbreaking because it's pure truth, but it's the last thing anyone wants to admit. We all want to make someone love us at one point or another, and the sheer number of artists who have covered this song proves that through and through.
3. "Jesse's Girl" by Rick Springfield.
To be honest, most of this song reminds me of my Glee days because DUDE, Finn just wanted Jesse's girl! Was that too much to ask??
4. "Almost Lover" by A Fine Frenzy.
This will be a favorite song of mine forever and always. Maybe because it's the story of my life and maybe because Alison Sudol is just one of the greatest songwriters I've ever loved.
5. "Just a Friend" by Biz Markie.
If this is not the biggest jam of your life then I'm not sure you even know what music is. The way Biz Markie sing-screeches the chorus always has me feeling the worst and best type of way.
6. "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus.
A large part of my heart beats for this song and this song only. Can Noelle just give this poor guy a break??
7. "I Want You to Want Me" by Cheap Trick.
I don't think I even need to explain this! I WANT YOU TO WANT ME I NEED YOU TO NEED ME and boy how it hurts when they don't.
8. "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt.
This song is so lovely and I want someone to sing it to me. That's all.
9. "Break Up With Him" by Old Dominion.
This is the perfect song for a country music skeptic who is in love with a girl with a boyfriend. Total game changer.
Cool, now that we've cured our broken hearts with this multi genre unrequited love playlist, maybe we can all go find true love together.
