The 89th Academy Awards Review

For an award show that was pretty bland at the beginning, it sure did catch everyone's attention towards the end of the night!

The 89th Academy Awards were held last night to honor the best in film for 2016. With La La Land leading the Oscars with 14 nominations, it was a front runner to take home many awards including Best Picture. But I'll save that result for the end.

Besides the result of the Oscars, the ceremony was somewhat bland as usual.

It opened with a performance by Justin Timberlake, whose song "Can't Stop The Feeling" from Trolls was nominated for Best Original Song that night. It eventually lost to "City of Stars" from La La Land. Other performances that night included John Legend performing the two nominated songs from La La Land, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Auli'i Cravalho performing "How Far I'll Go" from Moana, Sting performing "The Empty Chair" from Jim: The James Foley Story, and Sara Bareilles performing "Both Sides, Now" for the In Memorium tribute.

Jimmy Kimmel's hosting was pretty entertaining. He used his hilarious rivalry with Matt Damon throughout the ceremony that even included Kimmel conduction the orchestra while Matt Damon was presenting Best Original Screenplay with Ben Affleck who were presented as "Ben Affleck and guest."

Memorable award wins included Mahershala Ali becoming the first Muslim to win an Oscar. Ali's role as Juan in Moonlight earned him the award for Best Supporting Actor, in which he thanked his wife who just had a baby four days before the ceremony.

Viola Davis finally claimed an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Rose Maxson in Fences. It was a long and overdue award and makes one of many actors to hold an Oscar, and Emmy, and a Tony Award.

Damien Chazelle became the youngest winner of the Best Director award for La La Land, and Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney picked up the Best Adapted Screenplay award for Moonlight.

And then there was the award for Best Picture.

Presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, or as I like to call them Bonnie & Clyde, came out to present the last award of the night. After a montage of the films that were nominated for Best Picture, Warren Beatty opened the envelope to present the winner.

However, Beatty made a double look and gave the card to Dunaway who revealed La La Land as the winner of Best Picture. Things went downhill from there.

As it turns out, La La Land did not win Best Picture and the true winner was Moonlight. Confusion hit the air until Jason Horowitz, one of the producers of La La Land, revealed the envelope that had Moonlight as the winner. It turns out that Beatty was given the wrong card of Best Actress instead of the card for Best Picture.

The Best Picture mix-up is sure to be one for the history books for the Academy Awards. One thing is for sure, someone is getting fired for giving Warren Beatty the wrong card.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
