The 8 Types of People You Meet in Group Projects

At some point in your academic career, you have or will be assigned a group project with people you wouldn't have necessarily chosen to work with on your own. These are some of the recurring roles that always seem to make an appearance.

1. The Dictator

This is the boss of the group. The Dictator is usually the one who will create a schedule of all the deadlines, meeting times, contact information, and is likely an avid user of Google Docs. They keep the group in line. Don’t mess with this person, as they will proceed to roast you if you don’t complete your part of the project.

2. The No Show

Who even is this person? The world may never know. It may not even be until the DAY the presentation is due that you catch a glimpse of this elusive being. Unless the Dictator has already hunted them down, that is.

3. The One Who Does No Work but All the Presenting

This person is all talk. Literally. While you can’t count on this person to get their part of the project done, you can always count on this person to spew out perfect BS for minutes on end when it comes time to present the rest of your team’s work.

4. The Pretty One

This person relies on their ridiculously good looks to lure in unsuspecting group members to do their work. You may not have planned on doing anyone else’s work besides your own when you first went into the project, but once you come across The Pretty One, it’s all fair game.

5. The Foreigner

This may be the international student or the exchange student, but they’re likely to pull the “No English” card. Whether they’re lying or not, it’s probably best that you lend a helping hand.

6. The Procrastinator

You’re likely to get a “wait is this due tomorrow?” text in your group message the night before it’s time to turn in the final. It’s likely that they’ve been this way all their life, so your odds of getting them to start earlier are slim. It might be best to leave this one for The Dictator as well.

7. The One Who Does All The Work

Not to be confused with The Dictator, this person simply does not trust the rest of your group to pull through, so they’ll probably have finished the entire project by themselves long before the due date. They will either keep this on the down-low until the project is in shambles, or they will let the rest of the team know ahead of time and relieve them of their duties.

8. The Complainer

Just as the name suggests, this person will be complaining nonstop about everything, from the teacher to the assignments to the weather to their life. However, this can go either way. They’ll either complain but get work done, or they’ll just complain and do nothing. Let’s just hope it’s the former and not the latter.

Ideally, you guys grow to appreciate each other's quirks and mannerisms, but realistically, just try to get the project done and don't kill each other.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
