When school ends and you find yourself stuck at home, not only do you have to learn how to live with your family again, but you will learn how to live with the friends you have not seen in a year. And although you may hope you and your high school friends can pick up your friendship where you left off, that is not always possible. People change in college, including your friends. Here is a list of the types of friends you suddenly find back in your life.
1.The Best Friend
Regardless of how much time has passed, this is the friend you still spill your secrets to. This is your friend that will let you rant about your life as you binge watch Orange is the New Black, but then, tells you to shut up and get over yourself. Even if you have not seen this friend since high school it feels as if you saw this friend only yesterday. Neither time nor distance will ever tear apart your friendship. In other words, this is totally your person.
2. The 180⁰ Friend
Everyone changes in college, it is inevitable. However, some people change more than others and everyone has a friend that became an entirely new person at school. At times, this friend may now be unrecognizable. Maybe before she spent Friday nights at parties, but now she spends Fridays in pajamas ignoring your pleas to go out. Maybe a friend used to drop everything to be with you and now is self-absorbed. Maybe her style changed from boho-chic to preppy. They used to be Robin Sparkles, but now, they much more Robin Daggers. Becoming a different person is not always a bad thing, change can be good or bad, but it can make maintaining a friendship difficult.
3. The Mature Friend
Part of going away from home is growing up, but some people take that to heart more than others. This friend now lectures you on why you should get enough sleep and tries to start conversations about international politics and the stock market. This friend would rather go on wine tastings than go to a party. When you are out with a group of people this is the friend you can count on to always have a first-aid kit and tons of other important items you didn’t know you would need in a purse. Growing up involves gaining maturity, this friend just matured faster than others. And although, this friend loves to act older than she is and sometimes may act like your mom, she will always be a good friend.
4.The Friend that Never Grew Up
This is the friend that sometimes you cannot deal with. This friend still laughs at middle-school jokes, may think boys have cooties, and still expects Mom and Dad to do everything for them. When you hang out with this friend you are automatically transported back to freshman year of high school. And sometimes, you love being with this friend and the care-free immature fun you have together; other times, you just really want to tell this friend to grow up.
5. The ' Changed for the Better' Friend
Back in high school, everyone had those one or two friends who they really did not like. Maybe they were too high maintenance, maybe they liked puns just a little too much, or maybe they just rubbed you the wrong way. Whereas some of your high school friends now annoy you, some of your friends may have become better people. Being away from home helps some people grow up and become better people. Living away from everything helps to put things in perspective and this friend made the most of that. Hanging out with this friend used to feel like a burden, but now, you look forward to hanging out with this new and improved version of a childhood friend.
6. The Ghost Friend
Don’t feel bad admitting that although you swore to someone that you would stay friends with them through college, you barely talked to them. Everyone has those friends that during the school year you may text once or twice a month, like their Instagram pictures every so often, and sometimes, may wonder if they are doing okay. It is completely acceptable to lose touch with people, but it can make for awkward situations when you’re back home for the summer. Maybe you run into this friend at the pool and suddenly panic over deciding to make small talk, run away, or pretend you are still good friends. Maybe you decide to go to dinner with this friend and realize that you really don’t know anything about them anymore. This friend is simply there and you are not sure they can be considered a friend anymore.
And as you are home for the summer learning to deal with all these friends, do not forget you fall into one or more of these categories, too.
