These rules are applicable for one's personal life, professional life, academic life, athletic life, or just life in general.
Rule Number 1: Have Fun.
This doesn’t mean to just go out and party, it means that regardless of where you are or what you are doing, find the fun in the job, your life, your school activities…enjoy where you are and what you are doing. Find the fun in where you are.
Rule Number 2: 100% Effort 100% of the time.
No need to explain this one. No matter what it is, put your all into it. You reap what you sow, so why not make it your 100% effort?
Rule Number 3: No EXCUSES.
This doesn’t mean that you cannot fail or that you cannot make mistakes. Rather, this means that you take accountability for your actions and that you own what you do or don’t do. Don’t blame others or what did or didn’t happen. Take responsibility and accountability for yourself.
Rule Number 4: Communication.
Whether this is up or down the chain or across your peer group, be transparent and communicate. Also, understand that email, voice mail, and texting don’t constitute communication. Those are tools and cannot construe what the true intent of your message is. Communicate what and who you are.
Rule Number 5: Make a difference.
This is key and carries over to all matters in life. This is inspired from my former Priest Father Martin who relayed the story of the grandfather and his grandson. They were on vacation at an ocean resort. For the entire week, they would go on a walk and the grandson for hours, would throw starfish back into the ocean.
At the end of the vacation, the grandfather asked, why would he continue to throw the starfish back in when the next morning the starfish would be back. The grandson then bent down and threw one more in and replied to his grandfather, that he made a difference to that one. Make that difference in someone’s life. Maybe it is just holding a door or saying please or thank you. You never know how that difference will impact a life.
Rule Number 6: One Team Stronger Together.
We are never as strong as we are as a team. There will always be someone there to encourage us, carry us, provide the right word or gesture. We can accomplish more, do more, as a team. One Team moves us forward.
