Imagine that all of your worldly possessions are stored in one 12 x 15 foot room. Now imagine you must move all of this out in one day, only to turn around in three months and repeat the process. If you can relate to this then you’ve probably had the joy of moving out of your college dorm room. Getting yourself into the mental state to get this done usually comes in five steps.
1. Denial
As you gaze upon the pile of laundry that hasn’t been washed in a week and see the small mountain of trash, you think “This won’t take but an hour to clean." I mean surely it won't be that bad. But as hour three of cleaning rolls around you enter the next step which is...
2. Anger
You look through your closet knowing that all of it needs to be packed within the hour, and a rage starts to consume you that you haven’t felt since your professor gave you a C on a paper you obviously deserved an A on. I mean seriously, who in the hell needs 8 jackets? And you don’t even remember all buying those shoes. You've never been angrier with yourself than you are right now.
3. Bargaining
As you start to panic about your situation, you tell yourself that you don’t really need to bring EVERYTHING back home. I mean I’m sure the next occupants would be delighted to find a mini fridge that weighs approximately 100 pounds and an AC that seems magically attached to the window. Speaking of windows, it would be a lot quicker just to throw a few things out of it, because if you have to pack it all in your car you might cry.
4. Depression
At this point, you really do break down and cry a little. The stress of finals on top of the overwhelming feeling of panic you have finally hits you as you lay in bed staring at everything you need to get done. You're convinced that who you are as a person has brought you to this point and things will never ever get better.
5. Acceptance
After you decide that you've been a little over dramatic, you decide to get up and actually start the process of packing and moving out. You clean and eventually start putting clothes you never wore into suitcases, as you realize that maybe this won't be so bad afterall.
