You know that feeling when you are about to finish a series you've been watching forever?
Well, unless you've lived under a rock for the past decade, you know this feeling is an inevitable consequence of finishing any television series, especially when that series is on Netflix. Many students, particularly college students, feel this emotional bond to a series, mostly because they have never had the opportunity to binge-watch TV to this extent.
These are the five emotional stages of finishing a Netflix Series, according to Michael Gary Scott.
1. Anticipation
You've gotten through almost the entire series. You cannot wait to see what happens, but you know the consequences of finishing the series. It's the earth-shattering realization that you can't stop but you know that once you're done you will descend into an eternal gloom.
2. Sadness
The show's done. There's nothing you can do. You simply resign to your bed or wherever you're watching Netflix and begin to wallow intensely. Cue curling up into the fetal position, clutching a stuffed animal of some kind, and some possible thumb-sucking.
3. Anger
Your sadness has transformed into anger. The realization of how horrible your situation is and the fact that there is nothing you can do about it enrages you. You begin to uncontrollably hit yourself and throw things. You want to take it out on something or someone else but you can't. You did this to yourself, and you know it. Now, all you have left to do with your time is... study? (Cue gasp.)
The horror.
4. Food
There's nothing you can do but eat away the pain. All of sudden you have a tub of ice cream on your chest and ice cream scooper shoveling it into your mouth. Also, you've called every delivery place in a 20-mile radius, and told them to send a large, that's it, just a large.
You didn't tell them anything else. Regardless, they seemed to understand and brought you what is probably regarded as the sad person food on their menu.
You might try to talk to some fake people in the background to make it seem like you're not just ordering for one person, but the delivery people working the night shift can always tell.
5. Acceptance
No. You will never accept it. You will say you're OK, but you're not. You may start another show but this show will forever stay with you.
This concludes the five emotional stages of finishing a Netflix series, according to Michael Gary Scott. This list is particularly relevant for me right now, as I just finished the eighth and final season of "Weeds" this past week.
I hope all Netflix watchers out there can band together and help each other through these turbulent and trying times.
