The 12 Worst Book to Film Adaptations
The Hollywood Reporter

Hollywood has a tendency to make bad movies- it's what keepys Michael Bay in business. But it's the absolute worst when you go to watch a movie, after reading the book, and finding out that the only things the director kept from the book were the character names and the romances. This is a comprehensive list of the worst book to film adapatations.

1) The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)

https://www.google.com/search?q=time+traveler's+...

Okay, I do still love this film, I mean, Rachel Adams is the queen of chick flicks. But that's the problem. The book, written by Audrey Niffenegger, was somewhat of a sci-fy romance, but the film, directed by Robert Schwentke, cut out much of the science fiction that made the book so rich. The time traveling of Henry caused many more adventures, and effected many characters that weren't even presented in the film.

2) The Golden Compass (2002)

The book written by Phillip Pullman, raised a lot of religious and phiolosophical questions, much in the stlye of Tolkien and Lewis. That's why it was such a successful trilogy. But the film, directed by Chris Weitz, lacked that allegorical substance. Without that heavy content, it just felt like a series of well- shot clips of a little girl with polar bears and witches.

3) A Walk to Remember(2002)

t's hard to hate on this film. Shane West was the ultimate babe. But, to anyone who has read the book, the movie comes short. The most glaring problem is the setting. The book, is set in the 50's, and told from the point of view of an old, widowed Landon. That setting factored into Landon and Jamie's relationship as much as her cancer.

3) Insurgent ( 2015)

Divergent, the first book in the Veronica Roth series, was amazing and directed by Neil Burger. But Insurgent, directed by Robert Schwentke, the sequel, is one of those movies where you walk in to the theater, want to leave, but then find yourself staying just to see how badly that many people could screw up. The answer is pretty badly.

4) Allegiant (2016)

Also directed by Schwentke, this film is a failure. Not to spoil the book, but at the end, Tris learns, in a tragic way, the difference between being selfless and being reckless. This film lacked any of the moral that led the plot in the book. Not even the attractive cast can save this franchise.

5) The Vampire Diaries (2009- )

The book series, written by L.J. Smith, is vastly different than the very popular series. I will admit, I am hooked on the show. But the only real similarities between the book and show are the character names, the love triangle, and the presence of vampires. But even the vampire lore in the show is very different than what is presented in the book. Also, the main character, Elena is much more confident and assertive than Nina Dobrev's acting would have you believe.

6) The Originals (2013-)

A spinoff of the Vampire Diaries show, The Originals follows the lives of the first vampire family as they seek supernatural political control over New Orleans. But, out of all the characters presented on the show, Klaus is the only one that exists in the novels, and he is not the sexy stud portrayed by Joseph Morgan. Though dramatic and a hit, the show really shouln't exist, had the Vampire Diaries followed L.J. Smith's books.

7) Beautiful Creatures (2013)

A collaberation between Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, the series follows the romance between Ethan Wate and Lena Duchannes, and how Lena's supernatural destiny and lineage act as a constant form of tension between the two. Along the way, the readers meet interesting supernatural character's like Ridley, a magical siren and cousin to Lena. The film, though well-casted, lacks the intrigue of the novels. The side characters are hardly acknowleded, and until the final act, the film feels entirely like exposition.

8) The Mortal Instruments (2013)

The books series, written by Cassandra Clare, is full of originality that goes beyond another cliche YA supernatural romance. The film, directed by Harald Zwart, failed to translate much of that original style to the screen. Although the cast was perfect, and the chemistry between Jamie Campell Bower and Lily Collins was believable, the film ending didn't follow the books, making it unlikely for there to be a sequel, because one of the alrgest secrests of the series was spoiled too soon.

9) Eragon (2006)

Following in the style of other fictional fantasy stories like Tolkien, Eragon brought something new to the table-dragon wars. While other fantasy novels have featured fragons, few have put dragons so front and center. That originality wasn't to be seen in the film. The cast seemed very promising, but the film just felt hollow, lacking that originality found in the books.

10) Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)

Written by Daniel Handler, these books were like a much cooler Nancy Drew series. Just the right amount of bizarre. Sadly, the movie felt extremely rushed and very over the top. Part of that is because Jim Carrey is too theatrical, even for the character of Olaf. Another part of that is that the director, Brad Silberling, tried to smush the first 3 books into 1 movie. Luckily, rumor has it a reboot that will follow the books more closely will be released this year sometime on Netflix.

11) True Blood (2008-2014)

HBO can do amazing things, and as catchy as True Blood was, it did stray pretty far from the books. The series, written by Charlaine Harris, consisted of 13 books chronicling Sookie Stackhouse's adventures in the vampire world. The show, a 7 season hit, added a ton of new characters, changed the final love interests of several characters, and needessly killed off others. Also, the supernatural lore of the show didn't match the books.

12) The Percy Jackson movies (2010-2013)

So much potential! Bad characterizations, re-writes of integral parts of the plot, and addition of creatures that didn't appear until later books combined to ruin an otherwise promising YA franchise. Greek mythology is one of those topics that is so interesting and ready to be adapted into an amazing series, and yet everytime a single myth gets adapted, it's so bad you can't help but think everyone in Hollywood has the collective intelligence of a pineapple.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
