Before the world knew the music of 21 Pilots, it knew of just one. His music was just a form of "Magic" (you know). And you would, "never believe it's not so." Before Beyoncé became the queen, and Lorde took the world by storm telling us all, that we could, "never be royals," the world knew of only one royal ... there was The King himself. The "hunk a hunk a burning love," Elvis. Long before the Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC, and believe it or not, even One Direction, were even thoughts (yes there was a time before every girl in the world swooned at the words they sang) hearts were held by the Beach Boys, Franky Valli, the Four Seasons (aka the Jersey Boys), and the Beatles. Today, being known to the world by one name may seem strange unless you are Shakira, but I'm throwing music back to when Cher, Sonny, and Madona were the stars. I think you get the point.
Now, to some of you these names may mean nothing more than those old guys that your parents listen to on the radio. To me, however, they are the life of music. Call me an old soul, but "Rock 'n' roll is here to stay. It will never die." These songs are the songs I grew up with. I know it may seem strange, but to me the best and most real music that the world has ever seen came from those before us. It came from the generation that raised us, it came from the 70s and 80s.
Sure, many people may disagree and say that music can't be judged because it is a movement, an expression of soul even. Really, people? Someone talking fast into a mic about their enemy or the girl he or she slept with is neither. True music is the music that feeds and nourishes the soul. Don't get me wrong, everyone is entitled to like what they like and listen to what they want to listen to. But something tells me that the music of today has taken a turn for the worst. I know that there will be plenty who believe quite the opposite, but music shouldn't just be pointless words written on a paper and then sang for fame. Music should be backed by emotion and sang to be enjoyed. And no, Taylor Swift singing about her "long list of ex-lovers" does not fall into that category.
Music comes from all over the world. It represents culture, language, beauty, and believe it or not, music is what feeds the soul. In the 70s and 80s, music proved that if you have the passion and soul then race, gender, and age don't matter. Anyone else notice that almost all the popular artists from today are all in their twenties and fall off the face of the planet by their thirties? Their careers end just as quickly as they started. I guess this is what happens when we get our stars from YouTube. They all come from the same countries too! They are all either American, British, or Canadian. Where's the diversity? Where are the Abba's from Sweeden or the U2's from the hills of Ireland?
Before everyone tries to tell me I have absolutely lost it, here's one more name. This one I know everyone will know, Michael Jackson. Well guess what, before his solo career took off, he was the youngest member of the Jackson Five. So just imagine this: there would be no king of pop had the music of the seventies and eighties never existed. And sorry, Justin Bieber, but you will never be the king of pop.
So I hope that this took you on a Journey and that you "don't stop believing" in the power of music. But trust me when I say that the music of the 70s and 80s is far better than what we consider "amazing" today. So while I may be an old soul, just remember, while you are all stressing over your "Bad Blood" with someone, I will have nothing but good vibes alongside "the rocking pneumonia and the boogie woogie flu."
