Yes indeed, you read that correctly, ladies and gentlemen. The endless medley of costume-clad, passionately fiery Avengers champions were not this movie's primary focus nor did they emerge from the final battle the heroes and heroines of this harrowing day. While I was, at first, highly (understatement) skeptical in discussing this idea, I began to see the truth of the matter the more I thought about the story. Finally giving over to the thought, I decided to plug Thanos's storyline into Joseph Campbell's 12 steps of the hero's journey you may have heard of from high school English. Dust off your literary analysis skills, my friends, it's time for an adventure. [Warning: pretty massive spoilers ahead.]

Ordinary World

http://www.psd-dude.com/tutorials/resources/planet-photoshop-stock-images-and-psd-files.aspx

It's backstory time, everybody. The ordinary world is the hero's original home, his starting point. So which dark corner of the universe does Thanos call his home? Though found out a little out of order, we get our answer through Thanos's own flashback-by-manipulation-of-reality. His homeward of Titan, though now a pile of rubble and various space...stuff, was once a rather glorious empire. It was there that Thanos, our hero (hard to say, I know), found his beginning.

Call to Adventure

Adventure time! Come on, grab your friends, because it's time for our hero to face the problem that will propel him to action. Thanos acknowledges this problem at the same time he provides the Avengers a glimpse of his homeworld. He knew his planet of Titan was too overcrowded with individuals for the dwindling resources available to them all. Even as his mind formulated what he honestly believed to be the best possible solution, he knew that he would have to set about solving this problem by any means necessary. I mean, who else would?

Refusal

You can't imagine that every hero is instantaneously gung ho about the adventure they're about to face. In the movie, Thanos proclaims himself to be "the only one with the guts" to solve the problem of the universe. Through this quote, he gives an indirect nod to the terrors he must have faced in realizing the task he had to accomplish. He would be facing opposition from every side imaginable and would probably be feared by those who served him rather than ever loved. It wouldn't exactly be a dream come true of a situation, and he probably dealt with great deal of fear before settling on his mission.

Meeting with the Mentor

https://www.geeksandgamers.com/top-5-comic-book-callbacks-in-avengers-infinity-war/

This one is pretty self-explanatory in terms of the step itself but a little difficult considering Thanos's story. The hero meets a mentor that guides him on his journey. In Thanos's story, his mentor seems to be less a physical being and more an event. Everything that Thanos feared came to pass on Titan. It is clear that he derives a great deal of motivation not only from seeing his predictions proved correct but also through having to watch it happen to his own home. It sets his mind on a single goal and gives him the drive to achieve it.

Crossing the Threshold

https://io9.gizmodo.com/avengers-infinity-wars-big-battle-will-take-place-some-1823641687

The hero's crossing of the threshold is just his steps away from his ordinary world and onto the path of adventure. Thanos wasn't left with much of an option when his homeworld was reduced to the under-the-carpet of its realm into which space junk is continuously swept.

Tests, Allies, and Enemies

https://segmentnext.com/2018/04/02/best-soul-stone-theories-avengers-infinity-war/

This is the hero's time to learn the ropes of his adventure, to find friends, form enemies, and face stepping stones of trials along the way. For Thanos, this time period is his incessant hunt for the stones. Obtaining them comes with the prize of allies, the cost of creating foes, and the sheer joy of coming closer to solving the problem of the universe.

Approach to Inmost Cave

https://www.reddit.com/r/risa/comments/8ghz1x/thanos_and_co_ascend_mountain_on_vormir_infinity/

As the hero gets closer and closer to his goal, certain, inescapable obstacles standing in his way can force him onto a different course of action in order to proceed. As Thanos gets closer and closer to obtaining all of the infinity stones, one of his biggest obstacles is actually his own child. He is forced to face the reality of his beloved daughter Gamora's betrayal and dishonesty and find ways of convincing her to provide him with the truth of the location of the Soul Stone before time runs out.

Ordeal

This is the lowest moment for the hero, the moment when he is forced to face intense tragedy and anguish with the intention of testing his strength and truly seeing if he is worthy and capable of completing the adventure. This moment in Thanos's journey is easiest to pin. His depth of love for his daughter Gamora was only slightly outweighed by his desire to help "fix" the universe, leading him to the most difficult decision he has to face throughout the entire film - sacrificing the life of the one he loves in order to save the universe.

Reward (Seizing the Sword)

https://www.digitalfox.media/movie-wolf/movie-opinions/what-happened-to-gamora-in-avengers-infinity-war-spoilers/

Well, after facing some death and some not so nice stuff, it might be time for a confidence booster! The reward is the result of the ordeal the hero faces that helps him to achieve his goal. Thanos's "sword" to seize is the legendary Soul Stone, the final piece of the puzzle of knowledge he needed. While he still had the Time Stone and the Mind Stone left to claim, the Soul Stone was the only unknown in his plan and the biggest possible cause of the downfall of everything he had worked towards.

The Road Back

https://www.thewrap.com/avengers-infinity-wars-directors-russo-brothers-beg-fans-to-avoid-spoilers-thanosdemandsyoursilence/

With a huge leg of the journey behind him, the hero now sets his sights on home and his ordinary world and how to return. While Thanos's ordinary world is, in truth, in shambles, he still begins a road back to life and towards his final destination. Armed with enough power to overcome just about any obstacle or enemy in his path, there is just about nothing that can stop him now. His solution for the universe is within his grasp.

Resurrection

Forbes

This is the hero's final test before the completion of his journey. Everything is on the line - the achievement of all his goals is just on the other side of the final trial he must face. Thanos enters into this moment as soon as his feet touch Earth and he begins one final brawl with the Avengers waiting there. From the whirl of his first punch thrown to the axe that buries itself in his chest, Thanos is experiencing his final fight and the culmination of all his efforts. The final snap of his fingers acknowledges his victory. No matter the obstacle that stood in his way, even in this final trial, he stands victorious and has saved the universe in the only way he knew how.

Return with Elixir

This is it. The end of the hero's journey. Satisfied with its end and armed with the solution to the universe, the hero returns to life after adventure. As Thanos, bruised and battered but utterly successful in the end, mounts the hill and looks out on and past the horizon, he is rewarded with a moment's peace at last. He has achieved his goals. He has saved the universe from itself. He has given everything for the sake of what he believes to be the greater good. For this movie, the hero's journey is finished at last.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
