An Open Letter To My College Roommate Who Became My Best Friend

To my college roommate who became my best friend,

We joke around all the time about how we are the same person. We like the same music, we have a similar hair color, we're the same height, we have the same shoe size, we both come from the same background, we both love turquoise and cactuses, and we even seem to like boys from the same town even if that isn't a good thing. However, because we have so much in common and are the same person; I have some things that I need to thank you for.

Thank you. Thank you for choosing to be my roommate. We had the pleasure of picking each other when choosing roommates.

Although I had known you for two years prior to coming here and we were friends I never imagined that we would end up living together and I couldn't be happier that we are. We both have large personalities and somehow they seem to mesh perfectly and I know that there are a lot of people that couldn't handle living with me but I'm glad you can.

Thank you for being my shoulder to cry on or a listening ear when I need to vent. There are rough days when literally everything gets on my nerves and I need to get stuff off my chest and you are always willing to sit and listen even when the stuff I'm ranting about might be trivial. You're also there for my days when it seems as if the world is on my shoulders and nothing is going right and you never cease to amaze me with how kind and compassionate you can be in those times. I am so grateful for that and I hope you know I am always here for you too.

Thank you for late night adventures. Whether that be just driving to the farm and jamming out to Red Dirt country as loud as possible or running to sonic at 9 p.m. because you know that I need a break from studying or turning tough study sessions into fun by adding really loud music. I love how we can make anything seem fun even if it seems dumb to other people.

Thank you for understanding that a night out can be fun but a night in can be just as much fun when you're binge-watching One Tree Hill and yelling at the awful nanny character like she can actually hear you.

Thank you for supporting me. You always seem to understand my goals and why I do what I have to do to achieve them. You never question my crazy ideas which maybe you should sometimes, and you always try your best to help me in any way that you can. Whether that be helping me pick out what jewelry matches my outfit the best or helping look for internships to apply for. To you, my successes are also your successes in the fact that you are just as much about my success as you do your own.

Lastly, thank you for becoming my best friend. College can be rough. It's a roller coaster full of ups and downs and twists and turns. However, you make this crazy ride a little easier because no matter what is going on I know that you always have my back. I'm excited to see what the rest of this year has in store and I'm looking forward to making a lot more memories with you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
