Thanksgiving: Music's Forgotten Holiday

It's time Thanksgiving had some tunes of its own.

Thanksgiving: Music's Forgotten Holiday

Halloween has "Monster Mash," "This is Halloween," and "Thriller." Christmas has "Jingle Bells" and countless other songs. Easter has "Here Comes Peter Cottontail." Thanksgiving has...

Hmm...just what holiday songs does Thanksgiving have? Unless you count Adam Sandler's "Thanksgiving Song" (which for the record, I do) there honestly aren't really any memorable numbers out there about Turkey Day. This is such a shame because Thanksgiving is a great holiday that is often overlooked as people go straight from Halloween to Christmas. And it's not like there's a shortage of Thanksgiving traditions to sing about.

That's why I would like to use this opportunity to show you what we're all missing by not having any songs about this special day. Let's take a look at what it would be like if some of our favorite hits were about Thanksgiving.

Of course you'd have your songs about all the hard work and preparation that goes into cooking the perfect Thanksgiving meal:

"Crank That (Oven Up)" by Soulja Boy

Watch me crank that. Watch those rolls... Now watch me you (crank that oven up).

"Killer Recipe" by Queen

That's a killer recipe. Loaf of white bread, seasoning. Dynamite with chopped celery.

"Under Pressure" by Queen

It's the terror of knowing that the food could run out.

"We Didn't Start the Oven" by Billy Joel

Now the guests are coming and we're running out of time.

"Take Your Thyme" by Sam Hunt

I don't wanna mash your taters. I don't wanna bake your pie. I don't have to buy ingredients. I'm just gonna take your thyme.

"We're Having Cranberries" by Paul Anka

What a lovely way of saying how much we love thee.

"Too Large of a Knife" by Backstreet Boys

All you people can't you see, can't you see. This is really not that big of turkey. When the knife goes down, the plate loses a slice. 'Cause that is too large of a knife.

And it'd be a shame to not throw in some songs about basting:

"Turkey Baste" by Lady Gaga

T-t-t-turkey baste. T-t-turkey baste.

"Super Baste" by Nicki Minaj

Can't you taste that mmm mm mm mmm, mmm mm mm good baste? You got that super baste.

"All About That Baste" by Meghan Trainor

Because you know I'm all about that baste, 'bout that baste. No trouble.

There are plenty of ways to make songs about our favorite Thanksgiving foods:

"Refill The Gravy One More Time" by Britney Spears

When it is empty I lose my mind. Here is your sign. Refill the gravy one more time.

"Pumpkin Pie" by Don McLean

So bye bye my piece of pumpkin pie...

"Leg of the Turkey" by Survivor

It's the leg of the turkey. It's the thrill o' that first bite.

"Hooked on this Stuffing" by Blue Swede

I'm hooked on this stuffing. You know I'm not bluffing. That this is so tasty.

"Pour Some Gravy on These" by Def Leppard

My mashed potatoes need some love.

"Dressing on the Side" by Adele

You could've had it allllll, with dressing on the side.

"The Dinner Rolls" by Garth Brooks

The dinner rolls, by the butter knives. Another bun goes cold, while the cornbread thrives.

" Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-Lot

I like Butterballs and I cannot lie.

"That's Not the Only Bun" by Sam Smith

You say I'm crazy. 'Cause you don't think I know what you've done. But when you say it's empty, I know that's not the only bun.

"Can't Get It Outta My Teeth" by Kylie Minogue

I just can't get it outta my teeth. Boy, that corn is really, really stuck.

"My Eyes Saw What You Did With the Dark (Meat)" by Fall Out Boy

So give it up, up, up. Give it up, up, up. Give it up, up, up. Pants on fire!

With all of that food, it makes it very easy for us to overeat. A feeling that can also be described in song:

"When Will I Be Done" by Linda Ronstadt

I've been eating. Overeating. When will I be done?

"Serving No. 5" by Lou Bega

One, two, three, four, five. Everybody outta my way, I've been waiting in line for the fifth time, I should warn you. They all say that I should sit back down but I really don't wanna.

"Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

So we try to button up but our pants can't hold us, our pants can't hold us.

"Shut Up and Eat" by Walk the Moon

Oh don't you dare look back. Just keep on pace with me. I said, "You're holding back. Just shut up and eat with me."

"Honey, I'm Full" by Andy Grammer

Nah nah, honey I'm full. I could have another but I probably shouldn't.

"One Bite More" from Les Misérables

Another bite, another treat. This never-ending road to misery.

"Food" by Blues Traveler

Because the food brings you back. I ain't tellin' you no lie.

Here are some other great songs that could be Thanksgiving-related:

"Welcome to the Macy's Parade" by My Chemical Romance

When I was a young boy, my father took me into the city to see the Macy's parade.

"99 Macy's Floats" by Nena or Goldfinger

99 Macy's floats go by.

"Counting Blessings" by OneRepublic

Said no more counting dollars, we'll be counting blessings. Yeah, we'll be counting blessings.

I realize I probably went a little overboard with this list, but that just goes to show you how much potential there is for some great Thanksgiving songs. What a wonderful world it could be if we only had some Thanksgiving tunes.

Happy early Thanksgiving, everybody!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
