The last week of October just ended and you would have thought that everyone would have been excited to celebrate fun costumes and binge watch either scary or classic Disney Halloween movies. Embracing the weird and loving the dark which I am sure a lot of you did. Although, even before Halloween happened I walked in on a group of my friends singing Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You.
November just started and yet one of the most popular holidays is starting to creep up on all of us and it seems like the majority of people are already freaking out. And let's just face it, this may cause some people to go a little crazy. I'm not just talking about the crazy celebrators, but also the crazy haters. A few stores have already started the obsession and slowly the rest will all join in on the madness. I've already walked down aisles and started seeing the abundance of angels and white snowy things, red and green ornaments, and hearing the hub bub about the Jingle Bell Rock. All I can say is, HELLO! Wake up people and smell the pumpkin pie!
I mean honestly, we still have a whole other holiday to think about that has yummy food and football all day! Yet it always seems like the majority of people just want to skip over it using the day as just an item to check off the list in order to getting one step closer to the big Christmas shebang. Seriously I’m starting to believe that Black Friday is thought of as more of a holiday than Thanksgiving and I am sorry, but it is not going to happen if I have anything to say about it.
Now obviously I know that me, a 19 year old in college is not going to start a big uprising of followers towards a strike against Christmas in November, but what about Thanksgiving? You know the pilgrims, and the cornucopia full of food, and even the nice Native-Americans who shared this beautiful land with us. Now whether any of that is actually true or not, about a civil agreement of sharing the land or if they actually had a turkey for their first dinner, they still deserve a thought out celebration! Not just remembering a few days beforehand that the upcoming event of giving thanks is on its way and then it’s back to the normal Christmas fever.
In light of this crazy epidemic that has gone on for as long as I can remember, I propose a Thanksgiving movement! A movement full of new songs and movies about this wonderful forgotten day, not just a regular annual showing of Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving Movie. A movement to not just postpone the Christmas excitement for a little bit longer, but also to remind and help us celebrate Thanksgiving. If we don't then we will always start the countdown to Christmas as well as all the media which becomes very repetitive very soon. Then, because everyone decided to get on the Christmas train too early we all run out of songs to sing and movies to watch during the week of.
Okay, so maybe I am being a little—actually very—over dramatic and maybe I do sound like the modern day Scrooge or Grinch. I promise, I do like Christmas and its Eve; however, I just think it could be a nice idea to spread our joy and spirit to other calendar marked holidays. Especially because that is a lot of pressure on one day. If we don't fix it now, then one day Christmas may not be able to live up to such high standards that families or society has given it due to the previous year.
I hope I have shed some light on this situation and also now, for all of the people that are thinking the same thing I am, you know you are not alone. I am now done with my, what seemed like a, rant and would like to wish you an awesome month of November which includes Thanksgiving, and of course a Merry Christmas or any other joyful and spirited Holiday you celebrate. Just please remember to enjoy Thanksgiving; in all its food, fun, and glory!
