It seems like every year stores are opening up earlier and earlier on Thanksgiving day just so people can shop the best deals. This has me debating on whether America should just cancel Thanksgiving all together and have Black Thursday instead.
Back in the day places didn't open on thanksgiving day, then big retailers starting opening at around midnight on Black Friday. Which I was okay with because it gave people time to have Thanksgiving with their family and to travel in short distances to see family for the holidays before having to go to work. However when stores are opening at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving, giving employees zero time for a Thanksgiving dinner with the family or to travel to see them, that's where I draw the line. Best Buy employees are not allowed to request off from November 1st to the second week of January and some stores don't even give their employees their work schedule until one week or a few days in advance. Which means employees may not get to travel and see their families for the holidays.
Think about how early an employee has to arrive to work in order to open a store for Black Friday when they open at five on Thanksgiving? I think as early as 2 hours before hand. Now think about when your family usually has Thanksgiving? Is it around 2:00 p.m. or close? Now how do you expect employees to see their family on Thanksgiving when consumers are too eager to get the best deal for Christmas presents.
Dear consumers, why are you so eager to go out and shop when you are supposed to be with your family celebrating what you are THANKFUL FOR? Why should families have to rearrange their Thanksgiving family time because they have to go to work just to meet the demands of you the consumer. Do you think about the people who are there working when you shop? Do you wonder what they had to sacrifice just so you could buy something for as cheap as possible? Do you wonder how long it's been since they saw their extended family as you checkout and see how much you saved? Do you think about how your child will remember when you left thanksgiving to go shopping or do you think about how much they will love that present you got them?
Has America become so materialized that we have lost being thankful and spending time with family? Should America just cancel Thanksgiving and call it Black Thursday? Are big retailers eventually going to be open all Thanksgiving day? America stay home or go see your family and don't shop on Thanksgiving, and maybe stores will stay closed so employees can spend time with theirs.
Here is a list of stores that are open Thanksgiving day.
