Why You Shouldn't Participate In Black Friday

Make your Black Friday meaningful by participating in activities that don't include spending money.

Every year black Friday seems to become a bigger deal. And every year I refuse to take part in it. It seems ridiculous to me to spend the day after ThanksGIVING spending money buying new things. Thanksgiving is a time to be with family, relax, and enjoy the holiday of finding what we are grateful for. And some how, over time that has translated into buying everything on sale and cramming into a packed mall to compete with others to get the best deal. Instead of participating in black Friday in the future, I urge you to try spending your time in some other ways.

Spend Time With Family

Yes, yesterday was Thanksgiving and yes, you're probably sick of your family already, but find a way to spend the day with family in a way everyone will enjoy. Whether thats playing board games, having a movie marathon, or going for a hike, any of these options beat waiting in lines at the mall and blowing your money.

Go Outside

After all the food consumed the night before, whats better than going out and getting some exercise? This year I enjoyed a nice beach hike with my family and dog and it was wonderful. I felt relaxed and happy knowing I was burning some of the calories from the night before as well as spending time with my family and enjoying the outdoors.

Take Part in Green Friday

This may be one of the COOLEST ideas I have ever heard. In 2015, Green Friday was created in US national parks. This means all national parks were open to the public for FREE! The idea was to help promote getting outside and exploring instead of spending the day shopping in malls and stuck in lines. Make this a new thanksgiving tradition and turn your black Friday green.

Have Fun Making Leftover Meals

One of my favorite things about thanksgiving is the leftovers. One idea I absolutely love is using the day after Thanksgiving to try new recipes and make food with the family. My favorite is turkey soup. This way you'll free up some refrigerator space, plus make some new exciting foods out of all the leftovers!

So next black Friday, at least consider spending the time in another way. Consider all the ways you could enjoy the day after thanksgiving instead of spending it in a mall. Try to continue the ideas of Thanksgiving and sharing with others for the days, weeks, and months to come following Thursday.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
