Dear Fetty,
We, the students of SUNY Brockport, are less than pleased with you. But, our anger is not unwarranted, it is not unjust. We were promised a show, and received a joke. We wasted out time and money, only to have lies and excuses told to us.
We could not believe it when we heard the announcement, BSG had somehow gotten Fetty Wap to perform at our spring concert. Now, here at Brockport, we take the spring concert pretty seriously. It is the last big event before finals, and is away that brings a large majority of the student body together. So imagine our surprise when we heard we'd be seeing someone as big as Fetty for only ten dollars. Guest tickets sold out almost immediately, and everyone else rushed to make sure they'd get their ticket.
It was pretty clear that something was wrong from the get-go. Doors were supposed to open at 8:30 pm, but no one was let in before 9:30 pm. So there we were, standing in a line that wrapped around the side of the SERC, on that cold rainy night, for an extra hour. Granted, it was a lot warmer than it had been in the previous weeks and it wasn't raining too badly, but still, we shouldn't have been waiting that long.
By the time some people got in, the opening act was almost over. No complaints there, no one had heard of him and people rarely go to a show to see the opener. So anyway, wannabe rapper finishes his set, and the DJ starts playing music to hype up the crowed. Normally, this musical interlude is used to keep up the good vibes in the crowd, while the crew is moving things around and getting ready for the next performer.
The next person to come out was not Fetty, like everyone expected it to be, but some random girl from his crew. She was introduced and hyped up to be "the next" Beyonce. As you can imagine, she was not. Not only was she not talented, but she was booed by most of the crowed the entire time she was up there. We should have been a bit nicer to her, but let’s face it, most of the crowd was under the influence of alcohol (but hey, its college. what do you expect?). After that, two other members of his crew came up and tried to perform, but at this point no one was having it. The members of his crew were extremely inappropriate, making degrading comments towards women, calling up girls to basically dance on one of the “crew” members. These actions caused many students to feel uncomfortable.
It was around 11:00 pm when the writer of this article received a text, saying that a member of BSG had said that Fetty wasn't even at our school yet, but that he would be there soon. At a normal concert, the headliners are at the venue a few hours before the show begins, and the concert usually wraps up around 11, if not before. The gym was still extremely crowded, in hopes that Fetty would arrive soon. By 11:45 the writer received another text stating that the police chief had said that Fetty wasn’t coming. At this point people started leaving, not because of hearing this news, because no one officially came on stage to tell us anything, but because they were tired of waiting.
By 11:55 pm, a member of Fetty’s crew came up on stage to finally announce that he wasn’t coming. The crowd that was left starting chanting for a refund, booing, and shouting profanities in anger. Instead of handling the situation like an adult, this man started calling the students “jerks”, telling us to “shut the F*** up”, and giving an unprofessional attitude.
They claimed that there were “technical” problems with Fetty’s bus. The next day in Fetty’s apology video, he claimed that he had previously hurt his leg and was having problems with it, and that’s why he couldn’t come. He also claimed he had no idea he was even supposed to come to Brockport. Once source informed the writer that his friends went to his show in Syracuse that was also scheduled for Thursday night. So what was it Fetty? What was the real reason you didn’t show up? Why did you screw us out of our spring concert? Whatever your next excuse may be, we aren’t willing to listen. Don’t be so sure that you’ll be welcomed back here, at SUNY Brockport.
Thanks for ruining our night,
The students of SUNY Brockport
