Being the oldest sibling is possibly one of the greatest blessings in disguise. There is no sugar-coating the fact that yes, you were the trailblazer for your siblings because the oldest has that constant struggle of being the first to experience everything. For example, when you were in high school, there was a weekly fight in which you begged then ended up fighting your parents for the later curfew, which resulted in a punishment for fighting back. But when your younger siblings reach the ripe age of adolescence, your parents almost give up on a curfew and just expect them to be home before 5 a.m. It is a cruel, cruel world the oldest sibling has to go through, but you get over it.
Coming from a house in which I was the oldest and had two younger brothers, you would expect it to be pretty chaotic. You don’t understand when your friends with only sisters would fight with their siblings because you just could not relate. I am thankful for that. Not for the fact that I did not have to deal with a bunch of estrogen induced fights, but for the fact I never had to worry about one of my brothers having to wear my favorite shirt out. That rocks.
My family is extremely close, and we don’t fight much. If anything, it is when my siblings, dad, and I team up on my mom. I am thankful for the fact that my brothers and I get along so well, where they can even come to me with their girl problems and I can (attempt) to help them out to the best of my knowledge. It is one of the most flattering things to know that my brothers look up to me for advice, DESPITE me having absolutely terrible knowledge when it comes to relationships.
What I am most thankful for though, is that my brothers look out for me so much. When it comes to just me going out with friends for example, they sometimes check to make sure how I am doing/ not getting into trouble. That is always nice to hear. One of the most important things, if not the MOST important thing about my brothers is that they look out for me when it comes to guys. For instance, my brothers could really like a guy that I am dating/ am friends with, and if they hurt me in any way, they flip a switch and would do anything for me. Not only does it reflect highly on them for being good brothers, but it proves that they actually know how to respect another girl. I never have to worry about them treating a girl poorly because they have seen me when I get hurt, and know that it is wrong to do that to another person. You both rock my world and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
