Why I'm Thankful for On-Campus Living

My hallway is like a mini college family, always up for a study session or a movie night.

Why I'm Thankful for On-Campus Living
Whitney Browning

This year is my first year as a full-time college student. Since I was a freshman on campus my mom made it mandatory that I live on campus for my first year. At first I wasn't too happy about it, I thought I wanted to live on my own and live, breathe and sleep school.

A little secret for the internet is that my mom making me live in a dorm was one of the best things she's done for the beginning of my college experience. I was assigned to an apartment on campus with three other roommates. I was dreading living with people that I have never met before. I braced myself for the awful roommates from hell.

On move-in day, I was the first to move in. My mom stayed with me while I was getting my room set up and getting myself situated. My mom soon left and I was still alone in the apartment. Sunday morning a hear a door open and people talking. I was nervous to meet one of my roommates. That night I met my roommate Kassy, we were both in the kitchen getting to know the basics about each other. Soon enough we both learned that we both love One Direction and have so many things in common. I felt like I met another me. A couple of days before classes started I walked in and met my second roommate. She's quiet and keeps to herself, I don't know much about her, but it's okay if she keep to herself.

During Gig 'Em week I was making pancakes for dinner and I heard a knock on the door. The people behind the door were going to affect my freshman year in such a positive way. My neighbors from the whole hallway were going to each door introducing themselves. Me being me, I invited them in for pancakes and we all clicked immediately. In the days and weeks to follow we all became best friends, studying together having weekly fry nights. My new friends are so sweet and kind. I am so thankful to know each one of them, they help me grow into the person I want to be.

In the middle of fall semester while I was at home visiting my parents I got a text from Kassy saying the empty room next to mine was now full. I got so used to my side of the apartment being empty. I became just as nervous as I was in the beginning of the semester, wondering if she was going to be awful for amazing. The first time I met her I didn't realize she was my roommate, it was Halloween and I was wearing some vintage t-shirt with pumpkins and black cats. I stepped off the bus and she saw my shirt and complimented it. When I got back to the apartment she was in the kitchen, it was funny that she had complimented my shirt earlier that day. In our kitchen we got to know each other just like Kassy and I did. Megan is so sweet that I knew our neighbors were going to love her.

Everyone in my hallway is like a mini college family always up for a study session or a movie night. Moving into an apartment on campus was one of the best things for me, I got to make so many friends and memories with such wonderful people that I would have never met.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
