A Thank You Letter To My Hometown

Good things come from small towns.

A Thank You Letter To My Hometown
Yvonne Patterson

Isn’t it funny how ready I was to leave? I couldn’t wait to pack up everything and leave behind a town packed full of memories I never thought I would look back on or miss. Now, I find myself daydreaming of those Friday night football games and all the shenanigans we caused that I wanted so much to leave behind. Now, every time I come home, the memories come flooding back with me. Even though everyone complains about how much they can not wait to get out, I've realized why so many people come back. My hometown is a perfect explanation of who I am and where I come from. Every time people ask me about my home, I think about that little town that sits on the feet of that incredible mountain, and all I have to say is thank you.

Thank you for allowing me to have friendships that formed in preschool. Thank you for every single embarrassing picture my friends have of me wearing glasses and pigtails. Without those pictures, we would be missing out on a lot of laughs and many forgotten memories.

Thank you for teaching me how to think out-of-the box for things to do on Friday nights. When we missed the 7 o’clock movie at the theater, or it was after 11 p.m. and our town resembled a ghost town, thank you for forcing us to think of the most random activities that have made some great traditions when we all come home.

Thank you for setting the highest bar for views. Whether it’s your breathtaking sunrises or your clear, starry nights, you never fail to make it on every Instagram post from everyone in our town.

Thank you for allowing me to know everyone else’s business and everyone else knowing mine. The first time I lied to my parents was also the last time I lied to my parents, thanks to you. Thank you for teaching me responsibility and that if I did anything wrong, someone would see me, and I would get caught. Thank you for keeping me accountable for my actions.

Thank you for being a place that makes it so hard to leave. After every amazing summer spent at home, there’s nothing harder than leaving this perfect town. Thank you for making yourself so easy to miss and so wonderful to come back to.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
