Starting off a new year regardless of how long you have “colleged” is always going to bring along an abundance of surprises, unexpected twists and, ultimately, fear. And sometimes, the feels get you down and you miss your family through all of the chaotic mess of this thing we call college. But, whether it’s at the beginning of the year or towards the last stretch, you realize more and more that your roommates are truly what make this new experience a home away from home.
Here are the reasons to say thank you to your roomie(s) before finals kick our butts and we say our goodbyes until next year.
1. Thank you, Roomie, for keeping me healthy.
College is hard and so is staying healthy and well. Sometimes meals can all too easily consist of Cheetos and coffee because we are on a budget, tired and extremely hungry. But, our roommate(s) always knows how to keep us accountable by telling us that Cheetos and coffee is not actually a meal nor is it nutritious in the slightest.
2. Thank you, Roomie, for always making sure I look pretty (or at least making me feel like I am).
“Do I look ugly in this picture?” “Does my makeup look “caked” on my face or do I need more?” “Can you tell I only got three hours of sleep last night?” These questions amongst many others are frequently asked to the people who see you from your worst to your best. If your makeup is bad, they’ll help fix it. If you look ugly in a picture, they’ll tell you to delete it. If the bags under your eyes are larger than Mount Everest itself, they’ll help you smear on the concealer.
3. Thank you, Roomie, for never judging me.
From how much food I can down in one sitting to my mistakes to how often you can tell me something and I’ll forget 20 seconds later, thank you for being patient with me and loving me regardless of my flaws.
4. Thank you, Roomie, for always holding me accountable.
Studying for hours upon hours grows old very quickly. But when we run out of motivation, our roommate(s) will always push us further than we thought we could ever go. Whether they force us to get out of bed to go to the library, make sure we don’t skip too many classes or help us memorize our notecards, they’ve got our backs. Sure, “Cs get degrees,” but what’s better than an “A”?
5. Thank you, Roomie, for always having dance parties with me.
Even when exhaustion strikes, our roommates will always make time for a spontaneous dance party to relieve stress. From “Hollaback Girl” By Gwen Stefani to every Drake song ever existed, it’s always time for a spontaneous dance party.
6. Thank you, Roomie, for holding my hand (figuratively and literally).
Through the good, bad and ugly, the people who are around you the most have been with you through it all. People will inevitably disappoint us, and having an encouraging roommate(s) that have our backs and hold our hands counts for more than we can say.
7. Thank you, Roomie, for never letting me quit.
It’s so easy to give up on homework, relationships and the day in general by sitting in your bed and zoning out to the latest Netflix show. But our roommate(s) always pushes us one step further. And they make sure we're out of bed.
8. Thank you, Roomie, for always being my buddy.
A roommate or roommates are there to go to the grocery store with you, make the long journey to the library together and just be your friend when you don’t want to show up somewhere alone. It’s the best living with people who also become some of your closest friends.9.Thank you, Roomie, for dealing with my weirdness.
I know my jokes aren’t funny and I laugh way too hard, but you still love me all the same. I’m not sure why our roommates don’t kill us, but somehow we’re still here and they at least fake laugh at our jokes. It's the thought that counts, right?
10. Thank you, Roomie, for being my friend.
The deep conversations about the future, past, and present really make you and your roommate(s) extremely close. But also, the jokes that make you laugh so hard your stomach hurts give off the same effect as well. It’s crazy how living in the same building with someone for several months can create such close bonds.
Who would have ever guessed you would not want to move away from someone you’ve been in such close quarters with for all of these months? As cheesy as it sounds, it will be hard to not miss all of the memories you’ve made.
So, thank you, roomies, for everything and more. You guys rock.
