I don't like country music, at all. It all sounds the same to me, same tone and same words. I am one of those people that looks for something different in a song, something that moves me and makes me feel. Of course, when it comes to my dislike of country music, I do make one exception: "God Bless The Broken Road" by Rascal Flatts changed how I looked at love.
The song is mostly Rascal singing a thank you prayer to all the people who broke his heart, because at the end of the day those heartbreaks and other girls led him to the current love of his life, and how he wouldn't change it for the world. It's a song that anyone who has experienced heartbreak and has found a much greater love can understand. It's a song that I think about every time I feel thankful for my current boyfriend.
So, I have a thank you message to those members of my broken road.
Thank you, for showing me what real love is not. Thank you, for showing me how a woman isn't supposed to be treated. Thank you, for hurting me and forcing me to become stronger. Thank you, for ending us, because it forced me to realize mistakes I made, so I can learn from them. Thank you, for showing me what puppy love and small term love is, because I can now understand what real and true love is. Thank you, for treating me with so little respect, so I can realize that I am worth it, and I am a beautiful person in my own way.
But most of all, thank you for leading me to my current love. Because he is the greatest love I have ever known.
PS. Thank you to my boyfriend's broken road. Thank you for leading him to me and allowing me to treat him the way he deserves to be treated, with all the love and respect in the world.
Here's the lyrics to God Bless The Broken Road by Rascal Flatts. Even if you're not a country music fan, give it a shot. (lyrics are taken from AZ Lyrics):
I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you
[Chorus:]
Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you
(Yes He did)
I think about the years I spent just passing through
I'd like to have the time I lost and give it back to you
But you just smile and take my hand
You've been there you understand
It's all part of a grander plan that is coming true.
[Chorus]
Yeah.
Now I'm just rolling home
Into my lover's arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you.
That God blessed the broken road
That it led me straight to you.
