They say that opposites attract, and in some cases that couldn't be more true. Many times, this phrase is used to describe relationships, but it is entirely applicable to friendships as well. If you find a best friend that is very different from you, you will understand the importance of those types of bonds.
I am one of the lucky ones who found her best friend in pre-kindergarten. At three years old, she and I clicked and have been best friends ever since. This friendship is quite odd considering we have almost nothing in common, but over the years, we have learned more about each other and have grown to accept that we differ in interests, motivations, and beliefs. This friendship has allowed me to better myself, and for that, I’d like to thank her.
1. Thank you for introducing me to new ideas.
Being so different from each other, we fill our days with partaking in different activities and spend time with different people. You never cease to introduce me to another aspect of life that I wouldn’t typically have explored or known. Thank you for helping me be more knowledgeable about the world.
2. Thank you for bringing meaning to our similarities.
We have a powerful motivation to keep our friendship going despite not having much in common. Our relationship has continued sturdily for so many years because of our perseverance in finding things that interest the both of us, and making sure we honor and prioritize those similarities. Thank you for upholding your half of this mission.
3. Thank you for offering a different perspective.
Some people are afraid to discuss their opinions because they may lead to hostility or discomfort in the situation. I appreciate your willingness to add your ideas, although they may be controversial, to further deepen conversation.
4. Thank you for always being you.
Despite our many differences, you never change yourself to fit my (or anyone else’s) ideas or preferences. You are flexible in your understanding, yet strong in your ways, and I love that you always stay true to who you are.
5. Thank you for letting me be me.
You encourage me to share my thoughts and continue to respect me without prompting me to change for the benefit of easier conversation. Thank you for listening to my comments, beliefs, and issues, and verifying that my ideas have value without judging my perspectives.
6. Thank you for being my other half.
We rarely have anything to fight about because we have nothing in common. You always provide me with a new breadth of knowledge every time we speak. We have built a friendship on being so different and have placed so much importance on what makes us similar. Thank you for completing me.
Long story short, you rock!
