Mom and Dad,

I don't think there is a way sufficient enough to express my gratitude for everything you do for me. Thank you for always loving me despite it being difficult. For accepting me at the lowest points in my life. For being that solid foundation in rough waters.

I never grew up wondering if my parents would support me in a decision I made, or whether they would help me in times of need. I never went a day without knowing that I had two people rooting for me, or as my dad likes to call himself "your number one fan."

Mom, thank you for showing me the love of God. Thank you for always supporting me in all of my interests. Thank you for showcasing my talents. Thank you for the endless family dinners, shopping trips and the awesome birthday parties. You taught me so much; from how to dress to how to set the dinner table. You embody love and kindness; which are traits I identify with myself. Thank you for being a true example of a hard working woman for me. You always emphasized the importance of making something for myself, and never relying on others for something I can provide myself. You are independent and outspoken and I feel so lucky to model you in personality.

Dad, thank you for teaching me determination and generosity. Thank you for teaching me practicality. As I get older, the more I realize how useful being practical is. Thank you for passing on the good hair gene, and the skin that never burns in the sun. Thank you for teaching me how to ride a bike and how to drive a car. Thank you for teaching me how to save money, how to check the oil in my car and how to be resourceful. Growing up, I was always more like mom, but now I see more of your personality traits in myself. I am always finding new ways to make money, which you are no stranger to. Thank you for always knowing how to fix everything, and teaching me to never waste. You never held back showing love in every way you could, despite my mood swings. Thank you for that.

I'm in a transitional period of my life, as many college students are, but I am so lucky to have been blessed with the most wonderful earthly parents known to man. I mess up more than I like to admit, but my parents have never left me to fend for myself. They never dropped me, although they have had reason to. I not only owe them life, but I owe them many of my successes. Thanks, KZ and CZ, I love you both so much!

love,

Rachel

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
