A Thank You Letter To Kappa Alpha Theta

Kappa Alpha Theta,

Every girl has that one monumental thing in her life that has shaped her into who she is going to be. I just want to thank you for being my thing.

When I opened my bid on Bid Day as a scared and overwhelmed freshman, I really had no idea the magnitude of the impact that Theta would come to have on my life. I was excited to meet tons of girls that I could call sisters and to experience something bigger than myself, but I truly had no idea. I had finally found my place on this unfamiliar and scary college campus, but more than that, I found my family. I found the girls that would sit up with me at night and make cookies when I didn’t want to go out or would drag me to the library and hold me accountable for the muscle exam I had that week. I found people who would tell me that my semi dress was way too short and that I deserved more than a “Netflix and chill?” text. My sisters mean more to me than I can put into words, but that’s not the only thing this organization gave me.

Kappa Alpha Theta is more than the formals and the t-shirts; it’s even more than the study groups and coffee dates. It’s not just always having someone to say hi to in the hallway or someone to eat lunch with. It’s even more than the 150 women in my chapter.

It is always striving to do better, to be more. And it is having people that believe that you are capable of the world standing beside you. We are Leading Women, and that is not something that we take lightly. Thank you for showing me that there is really no limit to what I can accomplish and that there are people who will pick me back up and raise me higher when I fail. Thank you for showing me that it’s okay to fail. That it isn’t wrong or embarrassing—it’s an opportunity for growth. We are told that kites rise highest against the wind, and my sisters are living proof.

Thank you for showing me that I don’t need to be anyone’s property to be fulfilled. When Bettie Locke created her own letters instead of assuming those of a brotherhood she could not join, she stood up for independent women everywhere. We are the first Greek letter fraternity for women and I am so proud to belong to something so special and born from women who inspirations to everyone that came after them. Thank you for showing me what is really important, and why Theta women are as strong as they come.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to find out how much I can handle. Assuming leadership roles in this organization has been equally daunting and rewarding. I used to think more along the lines of how can I carry on such a legacy? What happens if everything goes wrong? But now I know better. I believe in myself as much as the girls around me do and I am confident that everything we do is to better this organization.

Thank you for giving me a cause, a family, determination to always move forward, the motivation to live up to the standards for scholarship, and the ability to be a leader. Thank you for giving me sisters across the nation who will understand me and who will share my values. Thank you for giving me a family that I can count on. Thank you for giving me a home today and every day, no matter where I am. Thank you for believing in me, I love you to the twin stars and back.

-A Proud Theta

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
