A Thank You Letter To The Wild Friend

Not to be confused with the party friend

A Thank You Letter To The Wild Friend
Kelli Raines

Hey friend,

First let me explain who you are to me. You aren’t the friend that goes out and drinks and parties and does crazy things. You’re not the friend who is a whirlwind of messes but an all-around good time. I have those friends too, but you’re a category all your own. You’re the friend that pushed me out of my comfort zone. The friend that made me say yes to things when I wanted to say no. The friend that made me realize that life is only fun if you make it that way.

So, wild friend, thank you for being you. Thank you for always being ready for an adventure, ready for the next big exciting thing and ready to make that happen all on your own if it seems like life isn’t keeping up. Thank you for having weird ideas (even more weird than my weird ideas, if that’s possible). And thank you, most of all, for being courageous enough to go out and do whatever you set your mind to.

When I first met you, your outspokenness and total commitment to being weird and wild every second of every day scared me. I didn’t think I could handle you — you literally ran everywhere, all the time. Your thoughts (and your mouth) went a mile a minute and never stopped. Like, not even at 3 a.m. when I had to get up for work at the crack of dawn the next day. And that hasn’t changed since I met you, but I have changed. Because of you, I’m a better person.

Because of you, I’ve learned to say yes. When I’m uncertain about a person or a social event, I channel my inner you and push myself out of my comfort zone. And, let’s be honest, the best way to grow and learn is to leave your comfort zone. You’ve taught me so much, in the most literal way, and because of everything I’ve done because I knew you’d do it.

Everyone needs a wild friend. A friend that pushes them to say yes, always, a friend that forces them to endure a 30-minute commute just to grab ice cream and watch fireworks for five minutes. A friend that is always up for a challenge, or an adventure or even just willing to try a new restaurant.

Thanks for being that friend for me.

Love always,
Your biggest fan

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
