A Thank You Letter To The People Who Believed In Me Before I Believed In Myself

Because I wouldn't be where I am without you all.

To those who believed in me first,

First, I would like to start off by acknowledging I would NOT be where I am or who I am without these people in my life.

Thank you to anyone who has ever encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone. While it seems like a safe and cozy place to be, I know I would not have met some of the most inspiring people I now know today. I would not have experienced some of the most challenging yet empowering moments of my life.

A big thank you to any person who has ever thought highly enough of me to offer me any sort of leadership position or job. (I know at times I may not seem to be the most promising candidate so thanks for giving me that chance). These people guided me through it all. They did not set me up to fail. Never along the way did I feel misguided or helpless. I would also like to offer an apology for anytime I have fallen short of expectations because I am well aware that I have.

By offering these opportunities to me, over time I have grown to believe more and more in myself. I know that I will sometimes be a little subpar and sometimes maybe just mediocre but hopefully one day I can step up my game and really succeed in whatever mission I am meant to tackle.

Family, employers, teachers, coworkers, friends, members of my church, colleagues, and baristas at a coffee shop... these are only some of the countless people who have in some way, shape, or form pushed me to keep going, to go the extra mile, to not settle.

These people are attentive. They pick up on the slightest signals of my weakness and build me up from there rather than tearing me down. These are the people we need in our lives, people who are aware of our strengths and weaknesses but don't use them against us; people who genuinely care. These are the people we should surround ourselves with, the selfless, the positive, the empowering.

In closing, I would like to mention a few people specifically.. mom, dad, my younger brother, grandma, grandpa, my yearbook teacher from high school, both the current and former youth leader of my home church, my roommate, my boyfriend, my favorite professors, my managers at work, the editors of my school newspapers, as well as the leaders on my university's Odyssey team.

Thank you,

A college student established by caring and supportive people

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
