A Thank You Letter To Odyssey

My life has changed for the better.

A Thank You Letter To Odyssey
Odyssey

I never really thought writing would be my thing. Sure, I'm an English major and I always loved writing stories when I was in middle school (thanks teen angst), but I never saw myself as one who could write to express myself.

I was made to believe that nobody cares about your feelings, or about your life experiences, but that all changed when I joined Odyssey.

People will ask me what Odyssey is about, and I never even know where to begin. I used to say "it's an online writing forum, like BuzzFeed and Huffington Post," but months into my position as a creator, I realized that we are our own platform. We aren't a blog, or a news page, or an entertainment site -- we're all three, and so much more. As a creator, we are encouraged by teams of fellow creators and editors to speak from our hearts and our minds. We take our real life experiences and use them as fuel for our articles. We express ourselves in a way that comes natural to so many of us, and we are a community because of that.

I've gotten to know so many people from across the country because of the Odyssey. I've met people that come from different races and ethnicities, people that identify with the LGBTQIA community, people who have different lives and different views than my own, and it's changed my own life. I've gotten to know so many incredible and beautiful people, and they've become my support system. I can trust these people, ask them for advice, and look to them when my day goes sour. They're people I can rely on in life, and ones I'll never forget.

I want to thank Odyssey, and the incredible human beings I've gotten to know because of it. I'm able to express myself freely and happily, and know that I've got the hands of fellow creators and editors to hold when times get tough. I'm able to relate to and confide in the creators in my community, or other editors in chief, and my managing editor has become someone I can trust without hesitation.

So if you ever wonder why I write for Odyssey, or if it's the right thing for you, I promise you that it's something you'll have to experience for yourself, because it is truly life changing, and life saving.

A special thank you to the creators of the Heart Land Community, and my managing editor, Samantha Allen. You guys mean the world to me, and I'm blessed to have you all.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
