Dear Taylor Swift,
I know you get a lot of hate for all of the heartache, heartbreak, make-up, break-up, ex-boyfriend, or something-to-do-with-a-guy songs that you write, but I want to thank you.
Thank you for “Our Song,” which is when I fell in love with you in fifth grade. I couldn’t wait to grow up just to ride shotgun with a boy. I thought this was how my future love life would go.
Thank you for “Love Story,” which my sixth grade English teacher made us listen to 10,000 times just to teach us Romeo and Juliet.
Thank you for “You Belong With Me,” which I blared in my room because I was the girl that wore t-shirts in middle school and I wanted the hot boy who liked the cheerleader. Keep in mind, this was middle school.
Thank you for “Fearless,” which made me want to buy a nice dress and dance in the rain just because you made it sound so fun. And because I wanted a “love” that couldn’t get any better.
Thank you for “Forever and Always,” because in eighth grade he definitely "didn’t mean it, baby."
Thank you for “Better Than Revenge,” because we all hate that girl that came in out of nowhere and stole the boy you worked all year for.
Thank you for “Fifteen,” which I listened to at least 20 times before I walked into school on the first day of freshman year. You had a song for every day of my life in high school, and you are the one that got me through those four years.
Thank you for “Should’ve Said No,” which my best friend and I jammed in the car to sophomore year when we got our licenses and her boyfriend did something stupid.
Thank you for “Cold As You,” which I have listened to at least once a week just to remind myself how terrible of a person someone can be.
Thank you for “We Are Never Getting Back Together,” which was mine and every other girl's "my boyfriend just broke up with me and I hate him and I am never talking to him again" song.
But then thank you for “Stay,” because after we changed our minds about the whole "never getting back together" thing, all we wanted him to do was "stay, stay, stay."
Thank you for growing up with me. Thank you for your last album which rocked my senior year. “Blank Space” was definitely a go-to because most high school girls have the "ex-lovers" that will gladly tell you "I’m insane."
Thank you for “Wildest Dreams,” for those people who kept a secret. Thank you for “Out of the Woods,” because we all know a high school relationship is never "in the clear."
Lastly, thank you for “Invisible,” which is (still) my go-to song every time I feel like I’m not good enough.
Taylor Swift, thank you for writing songs about every relationship a girl can be in, despite the criticism you get for it. Like you said, just “shake it off.”
Sincerely,
Your number one fan
