Thank You Letter to My Parents
Dear Mom and Dad,
You know I am usually not a sappy person but after twenty years in this world I have realized, there are too many things I have never thanked you for, so here is some sappiness to make up for it all.
Thank you for dealing with my difficult teenage years
I can finally admit to everyone reading this that I was an angsty teenage brat. I usually answered “how was your day” after school with a smart- ass comment and ran up to my room and slammed the door to sit on the iPhone you bought me until dinner. Yet the next day, you still asked me how my day was, and the day after that. You taught me to always be kind to people, and not give up on them, no matter how terrible they were towards you.
Thank you for not letting me go anywhere, anytime
Looking back I’m glad you do not let me go any sketchy party I felt like going to at the time, and that I had a curfew, and that you made my high school boyfriend and I sit in the living room when he came over. Of course, I thought “nothing bad would happen anyway”, but realistically, it would of eventually, so you prevented me from many tragedies in my life I would have been too young to understand.
Thank you for not putting academic pressure on me
I am not a 4.0 student now and never was, but thank you for not telling me to study and do my homework and try to make me a 4.0 student. Because of that I actually enjoy learning in college, for it was my own choice to be here, and I work that much harder to get the best grades I can, for myself and not for anyone else. I never feel like I have to be better than anyone academically because you just taught me to just be myself, in that part of my life and in every other part.
Thank you for being realistic
Although I did not always take advantage of the fact I could talk to you about most things and ask your advice, I know now that it was always an option. Yes, I probably still lied about my whereabouts from time to time so that you wouldn’t worry, but if I actually did tell you the 100% truth I am sure you both would have understood because you actually do remember what it was like to be my age. You actually did qualify for the “cool” parent category now that I am wise enough to realize it.
Thank you for teaching me to be a kind, decent person
I know that I am the person I am because of how you raised me, and take pride in the fact I am able to say I was raised right among so many people my age who weren’t. No matter how sassy I acted at home I always went to school and was kind to the people around me because deep down I knew what was right. You deserve all the credit for the person I have become, even at twenty.
Thank you for giving me everything, my entire life
Being a college student and hearing about all my friend’s lives really has shown me that I have it made and that you were on my side even when I was wrong. Whether you are financially supporting me, emotionally supporting me, or just being a friend when I need it, I can’t think of two better people to be raised by. Not everyone gets the support from two parents I do, especially as a college student. You are the two most selfless people I know, so for the last twenty years, and many more to come, thank you.
Love,
Your baby girl
P.S. could you deposit some money into my account and buy me groceries next time you visit?
