When I left for college everything changed.
I moved away from home in a new environment where nothing was familiar, I didn’t know everyone around me and I was on my own for the first time in my life. While all these changes can be a lot, there was one thing I could always count on: my group message with my girls. Over the last couple months, I’ve sent countless articles like this about how thankful I am for them but I decided it was time to write my own. So, to my girls (you know who you are) thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you for being consistent.
College is a whirlwind of emotions and changes, but one thing I could always count on no matter what was you guys. Whenever I needed advice about guys, an outfit or just needed to rant you were always there at all hours of the night. College and life can get tough but when I needed a reminder that everything would be ok, I knew my girls would always be there.
Thank you for making me laugh.
As I type this we have a conversation going on that is weird, but totally normal to us. Whether it be talking about our questionable decisions over the weekend or sending funny memes to the group, I can always count on them to make me laugh. Even on my worst days, when nothing seemed to go right a quick conversation in that group message could turn my day around.
Thank you for being so supportive.
When I decided to write for The Odyssey (best decision ever), they were the first ones to offer every ounce of encouragement. And when I made a big change in my life they were there the whole time supporting everything I did and picking me up when I needed it. There’s many things in life that I need a support system for and they are the best support system around.
Finally, thank you for accepting me as I am.
There were many times I made a choice that I later regretted (welcome to college) but when I told them they never judged. I was always assured that this one thing wouldn’t ruin my life and I would be ok. They might think it’s little but to me it’s everything; having friends that you can tell anything to and receive no judgment is one of the best feelings in the world
These are just a few of the many reasons I am thankful for my group message and the girls in it. I know how “millennial” that sounds but I truly wouldn’t have survived without it. I’m thankful I found my forever friends and may the group message stay as strong as we are.
