A Thank You Letter To My Adoptive Family

Because family doesn't always mean blood related.

A Thank You Letter To My Adoptive Family

It is universally understood that family is one of the most important factors in shaping a person's life. Phrases such as "family is everything" and "blood runs thicker than water" along with countless others represent just how crucial those familial relationships can be. Although we see these references about nuclear, biological families all the time, I think it is incredibly important to recognize the individuals who go the extra mile in spreading love and care to those who need it—regardless of their bloodline. I have been so fortunate to have a wonderful group of individuals who have done just that for me.

To the family that made me one of your own: thank you.

Years ago, when you first welcomed me into your home, I could tell immediately that you were comprised of nothing but pure love. Since then, you've taught me so much and helped shape me into who I've become today. I can safely say that I'd be pretty lost if I hadn't had you all as a support system throughout the years.

Each one of you has impacted me in different ways, and so I'd like to thank you individually.

To my beautiful mother: You are the strongest person I know. You inspire me every single day with your dedication and compassion for the ones you love. You work harder than anybody I know, which also means you deserve a vacation as soon as possible. One of my favorite activities is just being able to sit and catch up with you. I especially like our early morning conversations, before the day gets too hectic. Again, mom, you deserve a vacation. Thank you for all that you do.

To my protective father: You look out for me more than anybody, and I can't thank you enough for that. I appreciate all the times you've had my back and offered to "teach a lesson" to those who've hurt me. I'm also a big fan of your text message reminders to come home regularly. I'll be sure to do that soon, don't worry. Thanks dad.

To my oldest sister: You are such an inspiration in all that you do. You're incredibly intelligent, passionate, and strong. I'm always learning new things from you, and I'm always in awe of your bravery to stand up for things you believe in. Thanks for leading by example in such fantastic ways.

To my older sister: You're so talented, in so many ways. You've got a heart of gold and are filled with so much love. Thanks for being my best friend, and thanks for always spreading love to the world around you. You're a beautiful soul and do nothing but beautiful things.

To my younger sister: Thank you for being such a breath of fresh air in my life. I'm so thankful to have you to remind me to not take things so seriously all the time. Your energy and attitude bring so much light into my life and I'm so happy I have the opportunity to watch you grow into the person you'll become.

I never could've imagined I'd be so fortunate to have such an amazing family take me in as their own and pick up where others left off. Here's just a reminder that family doesn't always equate to blood. It can exist in many forms, and that's an amazing thing.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
