Thank You, Mental Floss
HowdyJeff

Dear Mental Floss,

Thank you, so much. For the past two years or so, I’ve been buying your magazines. The only reason I came across you was because of my wonderful creative writing teacher. I was completely sold on your awesome magazine filled with weird facts and history about (almost) everything that’s going on in the world.

My favorite thing about these magazines of yours is your eye-catching magazine cover. The inner child comes out because of all the colors of the rainbow on each individual issue. In fact, the bookstore that I regularly go to already knows that I’m looking for your specific magazine because I love it THAT much. Another cool thing that I liked was that some of the pages were upside down for my right-brained dominant self. Again, the inner child comes out because of your creative, eye-catching, fact-filled magazine.

Because of you, I’ve learned that in the 19th century, granola and cereal became a thing. Who would’ve known that cereal didn’t come til two centuries ago?! Who knew that the diet back then was just whiskey. What a breakfast. It was only about two months ago where I discovered your YouTube videos as well. Every two months, I look forward to buying your magazines because it never ceased to amaze me. I think it’s really cool that John Green is part of your crew on the channel.

Unfortunately, I did hear about you releasing your last magazine. As an avid fan, I have already bought it, but it truly makes me sad that it wasn’t selling very much. The pros about having access to websites such as the New York Times and Chicago Tribune is that it’s right at your fingertips, but the con is that there’s not really a paper magazine or a newspaper that we can flip through. As an aspiring journalist, I want to learn how to print all kinds of print media such as magazines and newspapers.

Despite this, I was very happy to hear that you’re still continuing although fully transitioning to the digital media side. I’m excited to continue reading about weird facts about historians, authors, and about almost anything, really. I am the kind of person who absolutely loves learning and gaining new perspectives, so I’m excited to see Mental Floss grow even more and to an even wider audience. Again, thank you so much.

Sincerely,

An Aspiring Journalist (and biggest fan)

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
