In Virginia, on August 12th, 2017, a nationalist white rally occurred, in which the people protesting were doing so for white supremacy. A car drove through the protest, and by end of the day, three people died and 35 more were injured.
I’d like to say I have no words, but I have plenty of them.
If these were black protestors, you can bet they would have been shut down on the spot. They had the privilege of being able to protest without a racial bias against them. Black people are considered threats for being black and especially for having a voice, while literal white supremacists can run people over with their cars and still be dismissed as “young white men fighting for their rights.”
Now don’t get me wrong—everyone has the right to protest (even though I don’t personally agree with anything they’re protesting for). It’s just that these protestors are treated differently because they are white. They are treated differently even though they are acting violently. They are still not called violent by a multitude of people. So people aren’t allowed to peacefully protest, but this kind of protest gets written off?
Just after Donald Trump was elected for president and people started protesting, we were told that “protesting is un-American”, but yet here Neo-Nazis are protesting. In reality, they meant that protesting is okay for people who want to continue having the only voice in American politics.
In Donald Trump’s tweet last night, he refused to condemn the protestors and their bigotry, which just goes to show how complicit he is in the matter.
Furthermore, people are upset that they are calling these white nationalists Nazis, but with this level of violence and bigotry, this is terrorism. Terrorists are white. Terrorists come from America, people who were born here as white citizens.
THIS IS TERRORISM.
I don’t ever want to hear a, “Racism isn’t real!!! It’s a thing of the past!” This proves, yet again, the exact polar opposite.
Things would’ve been different if they weren’t white.
I don’t ever want to hear a “You Millennials are so entitled” quote again because there are still people in this country who think they are entitled to the only political rights and voice in America. You want to know what we believe we’re entitled to? How about basic human rights and a decent existence without threat of violence.
I don’t ever want to hear a, “This person looks like a terrorist” because terrorism is not a look.
Call terrorism for what it is. Call terrorists by their name. Condemn this violence; condemn this bigotry.
