As a fellow millennial, we are often faced with the struggles of having everything together so soon. Well, some people blame their colleges or the government for why they aren’t succeeding in life, did we ever stop to think that we are stopping ourselves?
Here’s the truth, we have a lot more available to us than our parents ever did, but we don’t take advantage of everything. Here’s 10 reason why millennials aren’t where they need to be right now:
1. We're Still Growing
Part of growing up is actually growing. There are a lot of things you are going to have to go through to get to where you need to be. Stop trying to compare where you are right now in your life to where your friends are. Everyone has a different path to where they need to be, and your's might be taking a little longer than expected. Slow down, you’ll get there when the time is right.
2. We're Lazy
I’m just being honest. Part of the reason why many of us aren’t doing what we love to do is because we’re too lazy to actually do it. No one is stopping us but ourselves. Let’s face it, we go to work for a company for eight plus hours a day, but when we get home we don’t bother to do anything that’s going to get us closer to our dream career. I’m a writer and I love writing, but after working eight hours a day I’m extremely exhausted and don’t bother to put in any work on my scripts or ideas for stories.
3. We Live For Others And Not Ourselves
This is a big one, a lot of us are very close with our families, and they influence a lot of our decisions. Did you ever stop and think that you were living for them and not yourself? If so, stop it. You are responsible for your own life, and your own happiness. You are going to disappoint many people and make many unhappy through decisions that you make, but if you are happy and living your truth then they can’t be mad at you. Be Honest, Be You, Be True!
4. We Spend Way Too Much On Food
We can all relate to this, food is essential, and we spend way too much on this. As much as we all love Chick-Fil-A, try bringing your lunch from home sometimes.
5. Rent, Car Payment, Students Loans... Oh My!
This one says it all. No one could’ve prepared us for all the bills we would have as "Adults". From paying rent, car payments, insurance and the worst of them all "Student Loans", how does anyone expect us to save money? Well, there is a thing called budgeting, set a monthly one and stick to it. Soon you'll have some savings and will have more money to travel and see the world.
6. We Complain Too Much
Whenever a problem arises, all we do is complain. Instead of complaining, come up with a solution to your problem. Talk to your friends, family or someone who has been through a similar experience and get advice. Ultimately, learn from your experiences, and stop complaining about the things you can change.
7. We're More Focused On Social Media Instead of Social Issues
Once again, social media is a great platform, but it seems to have taken over our world and we forget that there is real life happening outside of your phone or computer screen. We need to shut down our phones and raise our voices and stand up for the issues taking place in our communities. After all, this is our world and nothing is going to change unless we do our part.
8. We're Stressed
We’re humans, we have emotions, issues, jobs and other things that tend to cause us to be stressed. We just need to find out what’s causing our stress and take precautions to reduce that stress or treat yourself to a "Mental Health" day, where you do something relaxing for you!
9. We're Too Carefree
It’s great to be happy and live carefree, but sometimes as millennials we are too carefree. We tend to do things without really thinking about the consequences behind them. Remember, everything has a consequence, so be a free spirit that thinks.
10. We've Lost Respect
We've lost respect for ourselves, our peers, our communities and our society. As millennials we already get a bad rep for being too wild and disrespectful. Maybe if we tried a little harder to do our part and show a little respect to one another, the world could be a better place.
We have so many more opportunities awarded to us than ever before, but it's up to us to take advatage of them. If we stopped being lazy, budgeted, stopped complaining and started living our truth, then we are halfway there. We only get one life and we have to live every moment to the fullest.
